My Sad Dead is now on Netflix, with all four episodes listed on its public page. The Argentine series is called Mis muertos tristes in Spanish. Pablo Larraín directs, and Mercedes Morán stars as Ema, a recently retired doctor who can see and hear dead people.
Ema has lived with that ability for years. She is also dealing with her mother’s death when her niece Julie arrives. Julie has a similar connection to the dead, but it affects her in a different way. At the same time, three teenagers are murdered in the Piedrabuena neighborhood near Buenos Aires. The family’s problem soon becomes something the wider neighborhood cannot ignore.
Who plays Ema and Julie?
Morán plays Ema, and Dolores Fonzi plays Julie. Alejandra Flechner and Carolina Álvarez are also in the main cast. Netflix lists Carlos Portaluppi, Luz Jiménez and Germán de Silva among the supporting actors. The series is based on fiction by Argentine author Mariana Enriquez. It uses material from more than one of her stories, so it is not a scene-by-scene version of a single book.
Larraín’s version had a festival premiere before its Netflix release. The show was made as a limited series from the start, so the four episodes tell one connected story. Netflix identifies it as a drama with ghosts and family secrets, which is a more useful expectation than treating it like a crime investigation.
Ema is the person to follow at the start. She understands what she can see, but she has not solved everything about her own family. Julie’s arrival gives the story a second point of view. The show then moves from their home to the neighborhood as more people are affected. That is the setup Netflix and the creative team have described; you can begin without knowing the ending.
How long is the series?
There are four episodes. Netflix’s current US listing gives them running times of 56, 50, 47 and 48 minutes. That makes this a limited series you can watch across a couple of evenings rather than a long season with weekly releases. This is a supernatural drama, not a true-crime account of the killings mentioned in the plot. Larraín and the cast are working from Enriquez’s fictional stories.
