The new A Different World series is on Netflix. Its public title page lists ten episodes, so viewers can begin Deborah Wayne’s Hillman College story now. Maleah Joi Moon plays Deborah, the daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert-Wayne from the original show.
The sequel does not simply repeat her parents’ years at college. Deborah arrives with her own friends and problems. Fans will still recognize the school and several returning actors, but the new students lead the story. That makes this a reasonable place to start even if you have not watched every episode of the original series.
Who is new at Hillman?
Moon’s Deborah is joined by Rashida, played by Alijah Kai; Shaquille, played by Cornell Young IV; Amir, played by Jordan Aaron Hall; Hazel, played by Kennedi Reece; and Kojo, played by Chibuikem Uche. Their friendships and conflicts are the focus of the ten-episode season.
Deborah has a famous family, but this is her college experience. The show gives her room to make choices without treating Dwayne and Whitley as the answer to every problem. Netflix’s trailers and cast information put the new group at the front of the story.

Which original actors are back?
Kadeem Hardison returns as Dwayne Wayne, and Jasmine Guy returns as Whitley. Darryl M. Bell is back as Ron Johnson, and Cree Summer returns as Freddie Brooks. Debbie Allen plays Dr. Langhorne and also works behind the camera as a director and executive producer.
Allen told Netflix that bringing these characters back is about seeing what happened to them after the first show, not only remembering old scenes:
“It’s not just nostalgia. It’s like, ‘Where are they now?’”
That idea matters for the sequel. Dwayne and Whitley are parents now. Their daughter is an adult starting college. The returning actors help connect both generations without taking the entire show away from its younger cast.
