In a September 24 interview with YTN Star, Ji Chang-wook described why he took on Cho Won in Netflix’s The Scandal. The character’s mixed motives drew him to the part, and director Jung Ji-woo gave him room to discover those motives during filming.
Ji said he and Jung worked through many takes without fixing one answer for Cho Won’s feelings. That uncertainty was difficult for him, but it also brought out expressions he did not expect. He recalled filming Cho Won’s reunion with Lady Cho on the first day, before he had settled into the set.
How Ji Chang-wook sees Cho Won’s relationships
In Ji’s reading, Lady Cho shaped Cho Won long before the central wager. He sees love, resentment and a wish to escape in their bond. That push and pull guided the way he played their scenes together.
Hui-yeon creates a different kind of challenge for Cho Won. Ji told YTN that the warmth he senses from her unsettles him after a life built around pleasure and old wounds. He said he tried to give NANA room to follow Hui-yeon’s emotions during their scenes.

Ji also spoke about the response to his work. Criticism can still hurt, he said, even as he tries to learn from it. He told YTN that acting continues to interest him and that he chooses roles when he can explain to himself why he wants to take them.
