Quick answer: which lure catches which fish?

The lure controls the catch pool more than the island does. Equip the lure tied to the creature you need, cast into open water, and keep cycling bites until the correct name appears. Story bosses are different: several require a quest-only bait, and the Albatross uses a defeated Tuna rather than a normal lure. Drip variants use the same bait as their ordinary version.

  • Crab Rod + Ham: Brown Crab and Shrimp.
  • Hot Dog: Rock Crab and Lobster.
  • Empty Beer Can: Spider Crab story boss.
  • French Fry: Mackerel, Gar, and Pike.
  • Beginner Lure: Cod, Pike, Piranha, Salmon, Triggerfish, Goby, Perch, Goldfish, and Sunfish.
  • Standard Lure: Catfish, Bluegill, Sea Urchin, Yellow Box Fish, Angel Fish, Needlefish, Clownfish, Seahorse, Bowlfish, and Blue Shark.
  • Professional Lure: Sengarat, Red Snapper, Tigerfish, Parrotfish, Bass, Halibut, Flying Fish, Eel, Voxelfish, and Dripper.
  • Scientific Lure: Stonefish, Blobfish, Anglerfish, Oarfish, and Superdwarf Fish.

How bait and lure selection works

A lure does not guarantee one exact creature when several names share its pool. It makes those creatures eligible to bite. That is why collection work should be organized by lure: finish as much of one pool as possible, check the encyclopedia, then move to the next. Sailing to a different island without changing the lure usually does not solve a missing ordinary catch.

  1. Open the encyclopedia with Tab and note the missing normal or Drip creature.
  2. Match the name to the lure group below.
  3. Equip the correct fishing tool and attach the lure or bait.
  4. Cast into clear water and reel slowly enough to identify the bite.
  5. Release an unwanted ordinary bite before landing it when the controls allow, preserving time and lure durability.
  6. Land and defeat the target so the encyclopedia and achievement progress can register.

The developer has not published an official Drip spawn percentage. Current player guides agree that Drip creatures share the ordinary bait table, but any claimed fixed rate should be treated as community observation rather than a guaranteed number.

Early bait: Ham, Hot Dog, Beer Can, and French Fry

  • Ham on the Crab Fishing Rod: Brown Crab and Shrimp. This is the small opening pool tied to the crab-focused rod.
  • Hot Dog: Rock Crab and Lobster. Use it when the encyclopedia gap is one of the heavier shellfish rather than the opening Brown Crab.
  • Empty Beer Can: Spider Crab. The can comes from the lighthouse quest and belongs on the Crab Fishing Rod. Keep the shell after the fight.
  • French Fry: Mackerel, Gar, and Pike. Pike also appears in the Beginner Lure pool, so a Pike catch alone does not prove which lure was equipped.

Quest bait should not be treated like disposable collection bait. If the quest item vanishes or is used without completing the hand-in, return to the relevant NPC and verify the state before buying unrelated lures or moving the save.

Beginner Lure creature pool

The Beginner Lure covers a broad early pool and is the first place to look for several ordinary encyclopedia gaps. Work through it before spending heavily on later lures; duplicates can still be sold, cooked, eaten, or used for money while waiting for a missing name.

  • Cod
  • Pike
  • Piranha
  • Salmon
  • Triggerfish
  • Goby
  • Perch
  • Goldfish
  • Sunfish

The normal Sunfish belongs to this pool, while a boss-class Sunfish can also appear through the Beginner Boss Lure. The encyclopedia and on-screen label are the safer ways to distinguish what the game credited.

Standard Lure creature pool

The Standard Lure contains several collection targets connected to the third-island tourist quest. Needlefish, Bowlfish, and Seahorse are reported as endangered catches that can satisfy the tourist exchange for the Carrot. Read the on-screen endangered label before turning one in.

  • Catfish
  • Bluegill
  • Sea Urchin
  • Yellow Box Fish
  • Angel Fish
  • Needlefish
  • Clownfish
  • Seahorse
  • Bowlfish
  • Blue Shark

Blue Shark also appears as the target of the Standard Boss Lure. The regular catch pool and boss-lure encounter serve different purposes, so check whether the quest or achievement expects a boss version rather than any creature with a similar name.

Professional Lure creature pool

The Professional Lure opens a larger mid-to-late pool. This is a useful place to earn money while closing Collector gaps, but keep enough cash for the separate Professional Boss Lure when the story requires the Tuna.

  • Sengarat
  • Red Snapper
  • Tigerfish
  • Parrotfish
  • Bass
  • Halibut
  • Flying Fish
  • Eel
  • Voxelfish
  • Dripper

Dripper and Voxelfish can become late Fishipedia blockers because a normal catch does not complete the Drip entry. Keep the lure mapping and the Drip checklist separate.

Scientific Lure creature pool

The Scientific Lure is the smallest regular late-game pool, but its catches can take time and money to complete. Patch 1.0.10 slightly reduced the Anglerfish because the developer considered its health excessive. The lure still selects the same group.

  • Stonefish
  • Blobfish
  • Anglerfish
  • Oarfish
  • Superdwarf Fish

A missing Drip Superdwarf or Drip Anglerfish still uses this lure. Difficulty can reduce the danger after the catch lands, but it does not change the basic lure assignment.

Story bait: Leech Bait, Carrot, Fish Bucket, and Tuna

  • Leech Bait: Giant Piranha. Find three Leeches on the forest island and give them to the quest giver to receive the bait.
  • Carrot: Pufferfish. Give the tourist a creature marked as endangered to receive the Carrot.
  • Fish Bucket: Bowhead Whale. Give the scientist five creatures on the volcano island to receive the bucket.
  • Defeated Tuna: Albatross. Catch the Tuna with the Professional Boss Lure, defeat it, and leave or carry the body where the bird can take it.
  • Defeated Bowhead Whale: Mutated Bowhead Whale. Throw the whale body into the volcano crater to trigger the final boss.

These items belong to progression, not normal collection fishing. Do not sell or cook them before the corresponding hand-in or trigger is complete.

Boss Lures and optional large catches

  • Beginner Boss Lure: Sunfish and The Old Pike.
  • Standard Boss Lure: Blue Shark.
  • Professional Boss Lure: Tuna, which is also the required bait for the Albatross story fight.
  • Scientific Boss Lure: Goblin Shark.

Boss lures can be expensive, and ordinary lure durability is not a guarantee. Save before a large purchase, keep enough healing and ammunition for the catch, and avoid buying repeated boss lures until you know whether the current one was consumed.

How to farm Drip creatures without wasting every cast

Drip creatures are rare visual variants tracked separately in the encyclopedia. They use the same bait as the ordinary creature. Equip the correct lure, reel slowly, and inspect each bite. When an ordinary version appears, release it before completing the catch when possible and keep the lure in the water for another bite. This reduces the time spent landing and fighting creatures that cannot advance the Drip checklist.

  1. Open Tab and identify one missing Drip entry.
  2. Use the ordinary creature table to select the lure.
  3. Reel slowly enough to read the creature label before committing.
  4. Release normal variants and land the Drip version when it appears.
  5. Defeat the Drip creature so the encyclopedia can register the kill.

Patch 1.0.5 fixed a bug that had required all Drip creatures plus one additional catch before Fishipedia unlocked. If the achievement still does not appear after the current list is complete, save normally, restart on the latest version, and make one clean verified Drip kill before changing any local files.

Why is nothing biting?

  • Wrong tool: some bait belongs on the Crab Fishing Rod rather than the ordinary Fishing Rod.
  • Quest not complete: story bait may not exist until the NPC exchange is finished.
  • Cast too close: use clear, open water and create enough distance for the fishing loop to start.
  • Lure already broke: check the inventory after an unsuccessful cast instead of assuming it is still attached.
  • Wrong target type: a regular lure and a Boss Lure can share a creature name while producing different encounter classes.
  • Drip expectation: the correct lure only makes the ordinary species eligible; it does not guarantee the rare variant on the next cast.

Collection checklist strategy

Finish the story first unless a missing regular catch is already in front of you. The later islands provide better equipment, more money, and access to every lure class. Then work from the smallest pools to the largest: quest and boss entries, Scientific, Crab Rod, Hot Dog, French Fry, Standard, Beginner, and Professional. Check Tab after every completed pool.

  • Collector requires every normal creature entry.
  • Fishipedia requires every Drip creature entry.
  • The story bosses and optional boss-lure creatures belong on the checklist too.
  • Keep a separate note for normal and Drip gaps so one completed version is not mistaken for both.
