A mystery controls when the audience and the characters receive information. An unexplained event creates the main question, and later scenes add evidence that supports, changes, or rules out an explanation. Useful clues can come from an object, place, statement, timeline, record, or character's behavior. A false lead appears relevant but sends the investigation in the wrong direction. The investigator does not need to be a police detective. Friends can search for a missing person, teenagers can follow a map, a journalist can compare accounts, or a family can uncover a secret. In an interactive mystery, the player may inspect locations, collect evidence, question characters, arrange events, or choose which lead to follow. The rules must still let the player understand why the final explanation fits the available evidence. Mystery frequently overlaps with crime, horror, adventure, drama, and comedy. Scooby-Doo: Origins uses a possible supernatural murder and a lost Great Dane puppy to bring the future Mystery Inc. members into their first case. Outer Banks begins with a sunken wreck, a missing father, a compass, and a search for lost treasure. The tone and danger differ, but both stories move forward by turning discoveries into the next question. A reveal should resolve the central uncertainty or clearly define what remains unknown. It may identify a culprit, explain a supernatural event, locate a missing object, or show that an earlier assumption was wrong. Surprises work best when they change the meaning of information already shown rather than replacing the investigation with an unrelated answer. The genre's main structure is therefore a sequence of questions, evidence, decisions, and consequences leading toward an explanation.
