Grand Theft Auto is an open-world crime franchise created and published by Rockstar Games. Across its numbered releases and standalone titles, the series uses fictionalized American locations, including Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas. Games combine mission-driven stories with free exploration, vehicles, weapons, side activities, and characters moving through criminal underworlds shaped by each city.
Grand Theft Auto V follows Michael, Franklin, and Trevor as their lives become connected through robberies, organized crime, and pressure from government and criminal groups in Los Santos. Its online component, GTA Online, expands the same setting into a persistent multiplayer world where players can build businesses, buy properties and vehicles, play cooperative Heists, compete in races and adversary modes, and join community-created activities.
The franchise does not use one continuous cast or a single campaign. Each major game introduces a different time, location, and group of characters, while recurring elements include crime, ambition, cars, radio, satire, and the freedom to approach missions in different ways. Earlier entries used overhead or three-dimensional city designs before the series grew into larger connected open worlds.
Grand Theft Auto VI is set in Vice City and the wider state of Leonida. Its story follows Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos after a failed score draws them into a criminal conspiracy. Rockstar has scheduled the game for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
