Makoto Shinkai's next movie has a worldwide distributor before it has a title.
Crunchyroll announced that it will work with Sony Pictures Entertainment to release the filmmaker's next animated feature around the world outside Japan. No release date, plot, cast, title, or first image accompanied the news.
That absence is not a mistake. The deal is the announcement. Sony and Crunchyroll are securing the international path early, treating an untitled Shinkai project like a major theatrical release rather than a film that must first prove there is an audience outside Japan.
The Film Is Still Being Kept Secret
Shinkai confirmed in May that his staff was working on the new movie every day and asked viewers to wait a little longer for a formal reveal. He also said he was confident in the project. Beyond that, reliable details are scarce.
There is no confirmed heroine, setting, supernatural idea, or Japanese release window. Any claim that the film follows the pattern of Your Name, Weathering With You, or Suzume is speculation. Those movies share recognizable interests, but Shinkai has not explained what he is making this time.
Even the Japanese distributor has not been identified in this announcement. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures are describing their responsibility outside Japan, not revealing the full production committee or domestic release plan. That distinction keeps the confirmed news narrow, but it also stops an international release from becoming a late question after the movie opens at home.
The lack of information gives the distribution news more weight. Companies normally sell an anime movie internationally after showing buyers its concept, cast, or footage. Shinkai's name is enough to announce the release plan on its own.
