Sally Field has won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Remarkably Bright Creatures at the 78th Emmy Awards. The result gives Field the fourth Primetime Emmy of her career and her first victory at the awards in 19 years.

The Television Academy confirmed Field over Claire Danes for The Beast in Me, Carey Mulligan for Beef, Sarah Pidgeon for Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette and Sarah Snook for All Her Fault. Remarkably Bright Creatures is a Netflix movie, not a continuing television series; “Movie” is explicitly part of the category Field won.

Sally Field now has four Primetime Emmys

Field’s official Academy record now lists ten nominations and four wins. Her first came in 1977 for the limited series Sybil. She later won guest actress in a drama for ER in 2001 and lead actress in a drama for Brothers & Sisters in 2007.

The Remarkably Bright Creatures result is her first win since Brothers & Sisters, creating a 19-year span between victories. It also brings Field back to the limited-series-or-movie side of the awards, where her Emmy-winning career began with Sybil nearly five decades earlier.

Who Sally Field plays in Remarkably Bright Creatures

Field plays Tova Sullivan, a widow who works nights cleaning a small-town aquarium. Tova forms an unlikely connection with Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus voiced by Alfred Molina, and with Cameron, a younger musician played by Lewis Pullman who arrives in town looking for answers about his family.

The film adapts Shelby Van Pelt’s novel of the same name. Netflix’s cast guide describes Tova as outwardly responsible and reserved while carrying grief connected to the deaths of her husband and son. Field’s performance anchors the story’s mystery and the relationships that grow around the aquarium.

The Emmy belongs to a movie performance

Remarkably Bright Creatures runs one hour and 54 minutes and is rated PG-13 on Netflix. Olivia Newman directed and co-wrote the adaptation with John Whittington. The cast also includes Colm Meaney, Joan Chen, Kathy Baker, Beth Grant and Sofia Black-D’Elia.

Because the Emmy category combines limited series, anthology series and movies, Field competed against performers from different formats. The award recognizes her lead performance as Tova; it should not be counted as a series win or as an award for the film’s full ensemble.

Remarkably Bright Creatures is streaming now

Netflix released Remarkably Bright Creatures on May 8, 2026, and the complete movie is available to stream now. There is no weekly episode schedule to follow.

The film’s availability makes Field’s winning performance immediately watchable after the ceremony. Viewers looking for the source novel can also identify the adaptation through Van Pelt’s title, but the Emmy result applies to Field’s screen performance in the Netflix film.
