Matthew Rhys won two lead-actor Emmys at the 78th Emmy Awards, taking the comedy prize for Widow’s Bay and the limited-series or movie award for The Beast in Me. The Associated Press identifies him as the first man to win two leading-actor categories in the same year.

The two awards recognize separate performances in separate competitions. Rhys won for Mayor Tom Loftis in Apple TV’s horror comedy Widow’s Bay and for Nile Jarvis in Netflix’s limited thriller The Beast in Me, giving him two acting wins from two lead nominations during the same ceremony.

Matthew Rhys won from two different lead-actor fields

In comedy, Rhys was nominated with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II for Wonder Man, Steve Carell for Rooster, Jason Segel for Shrinking and Martin Short for Only Murders in the Building. The Television Academy lists Rhys as the winner for Widow’s Bay.

The limited-series or movie field placed him alongside Riz Ahmed for Bait, Jason Bateman for Black Rabbit, Charlie Hunnam for Monster: The Ed Gein Story and Oscar Isaac for Beef. Rhys also won that race, making the history here larger than either category viewed on its own.

The winning roles occupy very different kinds of television

Widow’s Bay casts Rhys as Tom Loftis, the mayor of a remote New England island whose residents believe the place is cursed. Tom tries to modernize the community and draw new visitors, only to confront evidence that its supernatural reputation may be real. The ten-episode series plays that conflict as horror comedy.

The Beast in Me puts him in a darker and more contained story as Nile Jarvis, a wealthy real-estate scion who moves next door to grieving author Aggie Wiggs. Nile was once the prime suspect in his first wife’s disappearance, and the series builds tension around Aggie’s attempt to understand him without giving viewers a simple answer at the start.

The pairing matters because the wins are not two versions of the same performance. One role leads an ensemble genre comedy; the other drives a limited psychological thriller. Emmy voters recognized Rhys in both formats in the same eligibility year.

His Emmy record now spans drama, comedy and limited series

The Academy’s updated performer record lists eight nominations and three Emmys for Rhys. Before this ceremony, his only win was Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for playing Philip Jennings in The Americans in 2018.

The two 2026 victories add the comedy and limited-series lead categories to that earlier drama award. His three Emmy wins now cover all three of the Academy’s current lead-actor divisions, while the same official record preserves the earlier nominations that led to his first trophy.

The comedy win is part of a much larger Widow’s Bay night

Rhys’s comedy award joined acting wins for Kate O’Flynn and Stephen Root, plus writing and directing victories for Katie Dippold and Hiro Murai. Widow’s Bay had already collected eight Creative Arts Emmys before the main ceremony, turning the lead-actor result into one part of a broader run rather than an isolated win.
