What Remarkably Bright Creatures is about
Tova works nights at a small-town aquarium after losing her husband and carrying the unresolved grief of her son’s disappearance. Her routine brings her close to Marcellus, an observant giant Pacific octopus who watches the people around his tank and understands more about their connections than they do.
Cameron arrives in town looking for information about his family and takes work at the aquarium. The story joins his search with Tova’s history and Marcellus’s efforts to direct them toward a discovery. Netflix’s official synopsis describes the mystery without giving away the relationship that resolves it.

Who plays Tova, Cameron and Marcellus
Sally Field plays Tova Sullivan, Lewis Pullman plays Cameron and Alfred Molina provides the voice of Marcellus. The supporting cast includes Colm Meaney as Ethan, Joan Chen as Mary Ann, Kathy Baker as Barb, Beth Grant as Dawn and Sofia Black-D’Elia as Avery.
Netflix’s cast guide presents Marcellus as a narrator as well as a character inside the aquarium story. The production used a mixture of physical stand-ins, visual effects and actor reference work to create him, while Molina supplied the voice heard in the finished film.
The book adaptation and its creative team
The film is based on Shelby Van Pelt’s 2022 debut novel. Netflix reported in May that the book had spent more than 64 weeks on the New York Times hardcover fiction list and more than 30 weeks on the trade paperback fiction list.
Newman co-wrote the screenplay with John Whittington. Bryan Unkeless and Peter Craig produced for Night Owl Stories, and David Levine produced for Anonymous Content. The executive-producer group on Netflix’s film guide matches the people credited by the Television Academy for the Outstanding Movie win.
Van Pelt told Netflix that videos of octopuses escaping enclosures helped her find Marcellus’s voice during a writing exercise. She based Tova in part on her maternal grandmother, while events from her own life informed Cameron. Those statements describe the source material; they do not identify the movie as a true story.
