Netflix and Sega are developing a Crazy Taxi comedy movie, a new animated Sonic the Hedgehog series and a live-action Stranger Than Heaven film. The three projects were announced on September 14, 2026. None has a release date yet.
The Crazy Taxi film already has writers and producers. The Sonic project has a target age group and two named developers. Stranger Than Heaven has a producer and a confirmed live-action format. Casts, directors and production dates remain unannounced across the slate.
The three Netflix and Sega projects at a glance
- Crazy Taxi movie: A feature comedy written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher and Toru Nakahara are producing.
- New Sonic series: An animated show for an upper-preschool audience, in development with Carlos Stevens and Toru Nakahara.
- Stranger Than Heaven movie: A live-action adaptation of RGG Studio’s action-adventure game, with Nakahara producing.
- Release dates: Netflix and Sega have not announced one for any of the three projects.
The Crazy Taxi movie has its writing and producing team
Dan Gregor and Doug Mand are writing the Crazy Taxi film. The pair also worked on the 2025 reboot of The Naked Gun. Original Film’s Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher are producing with Sega head producer Toru Nakahara.
The adaptation is being described as a comedy. Sega’s game began in arcades in 1999 and asks players to pick up passengers, race to their destinations and earn tips while taking risky shortcuts through busy streets. The movie’s exact story has not been announced, so it is not yet clear whether it will follow a specific driver or use characters from one game.
Crazy Taxi: World Tour is a separate 2027 game
Sega is also developing Crazy Taxi: World Tour, but the company has not said the new game and Netflix film share one story. World Tour follows a driver named Axel as he runs a taxi business across several cities. Sega says it keeps the series’ open-city driving and adds its first online multiplayer mode.
Crazy Taxi: World Tour is scheduled for 2027 on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. Sega has not given the game an exact date.

The film still needs a cast, director and release date
Netflix and Sega have not named a director or cast for Crazy Taxi. They also have not announced when filming will begin, whether the movie will be live action or animated, how long it will run or when it will reach Netflix. There is no film trailer or first-look image yet.
The current images come from Crazy Taxi: World Tour and show the game, not the movie. The writers and producers confirm that the adaptation is in active development, but development can continue for a long time before a production date is set.
The new Sonic series is aimed at younger children
The untitled Sonic project is being developed as an animated series for an upper-preschool audience. Carlos Stevens and Toru Nakahara are attached to the show. The announcement describes a comedy built around Sonic and his friends acting as a team.
Netflix already carries three seasons of Sonic Prime, but the companies introduced this as a new series. They have not announced a connection to Sonic Prime, the theatrical Sonic films or any other screen continuity. The animation style, voice cast, episode count and release date are all still unknown.
Stranger Than Heaven is moving from RGG Studio to live action
Stranger Than Heaven is an action-adventure game from RGG Studio, the developer behind the Like a Dragon series. Sega’s game follows Makoto Daito from San Francisco to Japan and spans five eras and five cities as he fights for a place to belong and enters the entertainment business.
The game is scheduled for January 15, 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Steam and Xbox Game Pass. The Netflix project is a live-action film with Nakahara producing. No writer, director, cast or movie date has been announced.
The deal covers three different kinds of adaptation
The slate gives Netflix a broad group of Sega projects: a comedy feature based on a 1990s arcade series, an animated children’s show built around Sonic and a live-action drama based on a new RGG Studio game. Netflix has not said whether the projects will arrive in any particular order.
Moritz, Ascher and Nakahara have already worked on Sonic screen projects, but the announcement does not place the Crazy Taxi or Stranger Than Heaven films inside the Sonic film universe. Each project is being developed as its own adaptation.
