Peter Ostrum appears in the first episode of Netflix’s new Wonka show. The actor played Charlie Bucket in the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. In Wonka’s The Golden Ticket, he turns up during a montage of people finding golden tickets.
It is a small appearance, and viewers who are waiting for the factory games could easily miss it. Ostrum did not build a long acting career after the movie; he became a veterinarian. Netflix presents this as a brief cameo, not a return to acting or a part in the competition. That makes his appearance especially striking for fans who have not seen him in another Wonka project for decades.
Showrunner Emer Harkin said Ostrum’s participation mattered to the team because he remains so closely tied to the original movie.
“It was so meaningful for all of us to get that blessing.”
He is not the only surprise guest
Netflix also names chef David Chang, Hot Ones host Sean Evans and online creator Zach King as people who appear during the season. The show has other direct links to the 1971 film: Rusty Goffe returns as an Oompa-Loompa, and his son Ben plays one too. We covered their reunion on set when Netflix first announced it.
The factory itself is full of familiar pieces. Contestants sign a huge contract, walk through a hallway that makes them look smaller and ride a version of the Wonkatania boat. The show also brings back Wonka’s split-in-half office, a glass elevator and games inspired by the golden egg, everlasting gobstopper and lickable wallpaper.
Those are not simply props placed behind the contestants. The contract affects the competition, the rooms hold challenges, and the boat has to move through a thick artificial chocolate river. Netflix says much of the set was built to work in front of the players, with practical illusions instead of relying on editing afterward.
Where to find Ostrum
Look for him in Episode 1, during the golden-ticket discovery montage. The cameo comes before the series settles into its factory challenges. There is no need to search for him as a contestant or a judge; his appearance is a nod to Charlie Bucket, the part he played as a child.
