Melissa McCarthy says a psychologist was available throughout filming of The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey. The Netflix limited drama required several emotionally intense scenes, and McCarthy says some cast and crew members needed time to recover after difficult moments.
McCarthy plays Patsy Ramsey, while Clive Owen plays her husband, John Ramsey. The series premieres on Netflix on December 10 and dramatizes the family’s grief, the investigation and the public attention that followed the 1996 murder of six-year-old JonBenét Ramsey.

Why McCarthy accepted the role
McCarthy initially did not want to take the part. She felt the case might not be her story to tell, but she decided to research the family before turning the project down. That work changed her view of the way Patsy, John and their son Burke had been treated in public.
She also remembered judging the family when she saw tabloid coverage in 1996. McCarthy said that realization made her look again at how television and magazines turned the case into entertainment while the family was grieving.
The actor became protective of Patsy as she prepared for the role. She spoke with people who had known her and tried to separate the person from the limited images that had circulated for years.
She wrote letters to John and Burke Ramsey
McCarthy says she wrote several letters to John and Burke before and during production but has not sent them. The letters explained that she was trying to portray Patsy with care.
She also knows that good intentions do not decide how the family will respond when the series comes out. McCarthy put that point simply: “The only people that really get a vote are them.”
The series was made without the Ramsey family’s involvement. McCarthy’s research and letters describe her approach to the role, but they are not approval from the family.
A dramatic role after years of major comedies
McCarthy is best known for comedies including Bridesmaids, The Heat and Spy. Bridesmaids earned her an Academy Award nomination for supporting actress, while the drama Can You Ever Forgive Me? brought a second nomination for lead actress.
She trained in dramatic acting before becoming widely known for comedy. The Patsy Ramsey role uses that side of her work for a story built around loss rather than jokes. Owen said McCarthy’s involvement as both an actor and executive producer was a major reason he joined the project.
