Freida Pinto is at the center of Netflix’s next big family drama. The first photos of Unaccustomed Earth arrived on September 17, along with a December 17 premiere date. Pinto plays Parul Chaudhury, a wife and mother whose return to Cambridge after five years in Mumbai brings her face-to-face with Amit, the man she once loved. One sunny image places her beside friend Ruma; another catches Parul and Amit in a quieter moment beneath autumn trees.
For Pinto, the pull of the role is more than the romance. She told Netflix the show presents “the kind of South Asian American community that we’ve never seen on television.” Its families share food, history and expectations as well as secrets. Parul’s choices ripple through a circle of people who have known one another for years.
What does Pinto say about Parul?
Pinto framed Parul’s dilemma for Netflix as a question about how far someone would go to live the life she really wants — and whether she could accept the consequences. That is a more interesting promise than simply calling the show an affair story. Parul is a mother returning to a familiar city, with a husband and a son whose lives are also affected by what she decides.
Amit is played by Siddharth. Showrunner Madhuri Shekar says finding the right actor opposite Pinto took time: Pinto joined many remote chemistry readings with potential Amits before Siddharth clicked. Shekar says the production had begun by asking, “Can we get Freida Pinto?” The rest of the casting grew around her. That makes the reunion of Parul and Amit the project’s starting point, not a side plot added after the ensemble was assembled.
A family drama built from Jhumpa Lahiri’s stories
Unaccustomed Earth is adapted from Jhumpa Lahiri’s interconnected short-story collection. Shekar has woven the separate lives into one Indian American Bengali community in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Pinto’s Parul is married to Jai, played by Indraneil Sengupta. Sarayu Blue plays Ruma Mukherjee-Weiss, while Parveen Kaur, Adi Roy, Iyla Sundarsingh McKaig and Justin Bartha are among the larger cast.
The photos make the ensemble feel lived in: a conversation on a porch, a gathering by the windows, a moment between two people who still know each other too well. Netflix describes love, belonging and scandal as the forces that reshape this community. The images do not tell us how Parul’s story ends, and they are better for leaving that tension intact.

Netflix will premiere the eight-episode series on December 17. Ritesh Batra directs the first two episodes; Shekar writes and runs the series, with John Wells and Lahiri among the executive producers. For viewers who first knew Pinto from Slumdog Millionaire, this is a leading television role built around a complicated adult woman rather than a neat romantic choice.
Pinto’s first words about the series point to the best reason to watch: Parul wants something, but she knows other people will pay for her decision too. The new photos put faces to those people. December will show how the family deals with the consequences.
