G1, G2, and G3 are the labels fans use for three major versions of Monster High. G1 starts with the original 2010 franchise, G2 begins with the 2016 reboot, and G3 refers to the 2022 relaunch. They are not three seasons of one continuous story.
Choose a starting point
- For the original characters and style, begin with the early web episodes and animated stories from the 2010 era.
- For the 2016 origin story, start with Welcome to Monster High, then continue to Electrified.
- For the newer animated adventures, start with Monster High (2022). You do not need to finish the older films first.
- For live action, watch Monster High: The Movie (2022) before Monster High 2. Keep this film story separate from the animated show.
G1: the original Monster High
The first version introduced the school through dolls and short animated adventures. Frankie Stein, Draculaura, Clawdeen Wolf, Cleo de Nile, and Lagoona Blue became familiar faces, with their monster families helping explain their names and abilities. Longer animated stories then took the group into different settings and new kinds of trouble.
If you have found an older clip or doll, check the production or collection rather than relying only on the character’s name. Draculaura and Frankie appear across multiple versions, and a detail from one is not automatically true of another.
G2: a different beginning for the school
Welcome to Monster High (2016) starts again with a new account of how the school comes together. Electrified follows in this version. Characters such as Moanica D’Kay help distinguish it from the original era.
This is why placing every animated movie into one long timeline causes problems. The school’s origin has been retold, rather than simply continued after the earlier films. Choose a version first, then follow its stories.
G3: the 2022 animated series
The newer show follows Clawdeen as she discovers Monster High and learns more about her family. Her friends include Draculaura, Frankie, and Deuce. The characters have redesigned appearances and updated histories, so the show introduces them on its own terms.
Meet the main characters
- Clawdeen Wolf is a werewolf. In the 2022 story, she is part human as well, and discovering her family history helps drive her adventures.
- Draculaura is Dracula’s daughter. The 2022 animated version also gives her an interest in witchcraft.
- Frankie Stein is a reanimated monster learning about life and friendship. Frankie uses they/them pronouns in the 2022 version; older versions use she/her.
- Cleo de Nile is a mummy whose royal background is part of how she presents herself.
- Lagoona Blue is a sea monster. Her design and background change across versions, so use a generation-specific description when comparing characters.
- Deuce Gorgon is the snake-haired student. His gorgon abilities are another reason everyday school situations can become complicated.
The live-action films are their own story
Monster High: The Movie stars Miia Harris as Clawdeen, Ceci Balagot as Frankie, and Nayah Damasen as Draculaura. It is a musical, with live actors rather than the animated cast. Monster High 2 continues that film story.
The live-action films and animated series share a relaunch period, but matching names do not make their plots interchangeable. An event in the musical is not automatically something that happened to the animated characters.
A quick check before watching or looking up a character
Look for the full title, year, and animation style. If a search result describes a different family history or appearance from the episode in front of you, it may be talking about another generation. Adding “2010,” “2016,” or “2022 animated series” to your search usually makes the answer more specific.
