Proto Man is not just a second skin for Mega Man. Capcom has explained the systems that make him a separate fighter in Mega Man: Dual Override: a shorter-range buster, shield moves that work on attack and defense, and a heat problem if he pushes those abilities too hard.
The game is planned for spring 2027. Capcom’s new breakdown focuses on what players will actually do when they choose the red-clad hero, rather than simply confirming that he is playable.
Proto Man has to get close to hit hard
Mega Man remains the safer choice at a distance. Proto Man’s buster has less reach, but Capcom says it hits much harder up close. That changes the rhythm of a familiar Mega Man stage: instead of clearing every threat from the far side of the screen, Proto Man has to read an opening and move in.
His shield is the other big difference. It can protect him, but it also becomes an attack and movement tool. Defeating bosses gives Proto Man new moves built around that shield. Mega Man still copies Robot Master powers; Proto Man grows a different arsenal.

His best moves can overheat him
Proto Man can keep several Shield Actions ready at once instead of switching between them one by one. The catch is heat. Repeated use strains him, so rushing every enemy with the same strong move is not meant to be a free shortcut through the stage.
Capcom has not published every heat threshold or recovery time. What is clear is the intended choice: use the shield to press an advantage, then ease off before the cost catches up with you.
More than 50 chips let both heroes change their builds
Dual Override also has more than 50 Custom Chips. They offer active skills or passive effects, with options for damage, staying alive and other ways to tailor a run. Capcom has not posted the full chip list, but the system means two players can pick the same hero and still approach a stage differently.

Override is powerful, then dangerous
Both Mega Man and Proto Man can trigger the new Override form for a short burst of strength. When it ends, they become more vulnerable. That makes the timing important, especially during a boss fight: use it to finish the job, or risk being exposed when the boost runs out.
PlayStation lists PS5 and PS4 for spring 2027. Nintendo has separately confirmed Switch 2 and Switch for the same season. Capcom has not announced an exact day, a complete chip list or the full set of Robot Masters.
