Before Kit Harington was cast as Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO’s Harry Potter series, the books were already part of his nightly routine. On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he said he listens to Stephen Fry’s audiobooks when his mind is busy at night.
That makes this casting a little more personal than a familiar face joining another big franchise. Harington has already voiced Lockhart in Audible’s full-cast Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Now he will play the vain Hogwarts professor on screen in the show’s second season.
What did Kit Harington say?
Asked about joining the series, Harington said he was already excited by the idea of giving the books more room than the films had. His answer when the offer arrived was brief:

He also joked about Lockhart’s vanity, calling the character close to a version of himself. It was a joke, not a hint at how he plans to play him. Harington said he has begun talking about the character’s look but would not share details.
When will he appear?
Harington is cast for Season 2, not the first season. The first season, based on The Philosopher’s Stone, is due on HBO and HBO Max where available at Christmas 2026. HBO has not announced a Season 2 premiere date or shown Harington in costume.
