Alkimia Interactive outlines the next features planned for Gothic 1 Remake.
Gothic 1 Remake is not finished growing after launch. Alkimia Interactive has confirmed four additions planned for the next few months: Photo Mode, Marvin Mode, a mod kit, and alternative progression mechanics.
The announcement came during the THQ Nordic Digital Showcase on August 7. There is no exact date for any of the features yet, and the developer has not said whether they will arrive together or through separate updates. For now, players have a clear look at what is coming, but not the full rollout plan.
Every new Gothic 1 Remake feature announced
Alkimia Interactive confirmed these additions:
Photo Mode
Marvin Mode
A mod kit
Alternative progression mechanics
All four are expected within the next couple of months. The studio did not announce individual release dates, patch numbers, or a specific order.
The update plan follows the game’s June 5 release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Gothic 1 Remake rebuilt the original RPG in Unreal Engine 5 while keeping the hostile Valley of Mines, three competing camps, and open progression that made the 2001 game stand out.
What will Photo Mode add?
Photo Mode will give players a proper way to capture the Valley of Mines without relying on ordinary gameplay screenshots. That is a natural fit for a remake filled with rebuilt camps, rocky paths, old mines, and the kind of lighting that can turn a quiet walk into a surprisingly good shot.
The developer has not explained the camera controls or editing options. We do not know whether players will be able to change the time of day, hide characters, adjust the field of view, add filters, or pause combat scenes. Those details should arrive closer to the update.
Even a straightforward free camera would be useful. Gothic’s world is dense rather than enormous, and many memorable places are packed into narrow routes and layered settlements. A tool that lets players step outside the normal camera could reveal how much work went into rebuilding those spaces.
What is Marvin Mode in Gothic 1 Remake?

Marvin Mode is the announcement with the most history behind it. THQ Nordic describes it as the return of Gothic’s legendary free-style mode, where players can use cheats, spawn creatures and NPCs, and see how well the game’s simulation holds together.
In other words, it is part cheat mode and part sandbox. Instead of starting another serious run, players can create strange encounters, drop characters into places they were never meant to visit, or test what happens when the game’s systems are pushed in unusual directions.
That playful freedom has always suited Gothic. Its NPC schedules, factions, wildlife, and world rules interact in ways that can create stories the quest log never planned. Marvin Mode opens the door for players to experiment with those systems directly.
The modern version has not been shown in detail. We still need to learn how it is activated, which commands it includes, and whether the same tools will be available on PC and consoles. Until Alkimia publishes a feature list, it is best to treat the confirmed examples as a preview rather than a complete command menu.
The mod kit could give the remake a much longer life

The planned mod kit may become the most important addition for PC players. Gothic has stayed alive for decades partly because its community kept building fixes, conversions, quests, and new adventures around the original games. Official tools could make that work easier for Gothic 1 Remake.
Alkimia has not said how deep the kit will go. It could support small gameplay changes, new items, adjusted balance, or much larger projects, but none of those possibilities is guaranteed yet. Documentation, distribution, Steam Workshop support, and asset rules also remain unconfirmed.
Console support is another open question. Modding tools are normally built around PC development, and the announcement did not promise that PS5 or Xbox players will be able to install community creations. Anyone buying the game specifically for mods should wait for the technical details before assuming every platform will receive the same support.
Still, confirming a mod kit this early sends a useful message. Alkimia is not treating the remake as a game that ships, receives a few fixes, and disappears. The studio is giving players a chance to make the Valley of Mines their own.
Alternative progression mechanics are the biggest mystery
“Alternative progression mechanics” is the least explained item on the roadmap. Gothic already ties character growth to trainers, learning points, faction access, equipment, and the dangerous places a player can survive. A change to progression could touch many parts of the game.
It might mean optional ways to build the Nameless Hero, adjustments for repeat playthroughs, or a different approach to unlocking skills. The announcement does not tell us which of those ideas is correct, so there is no reason to turn a broad phrase into a specific promise.
The interesting part is that Alkimia calls the mechanics alternative. That wording suggests an option rather than a replacement for the current progression system. Players who like the existing structure may be able to keep it, while another route offers a different pace or challenge. We will know more when the studio explains how the feature works.
When will the Gothic 1 Remake updates release?
The new features are planned for the next couple of months, but no calendar has been shared. Photo Mode could arrive in one patch while the mod kit takes longer, or everything could be bundled together. Both possibilities remain open.
There is also no confirmation that every feature will launch simultaneously on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Photo Mode and alternative progression could work across all three platforms, while Marvin Mode and mod tools may require different controls or policies. Alkimia needs to confirm the final platform plan.
The studio did not label the additions as paid DLC. It also did not explicitly call each one a free update. Players should wait for the patch announcement before making assumptions about pricing, especially if the features are released in separate packages.
What does this mean for a Gothic 2 Remake?
The showcase ended with a deliberate tease about the next game. THQ Nordic said the team had heard the questions, but its answer would take time and might come during the THQ Nordic Showcase 2027.
That is not a Gothic 2 Remake announcement. It does show that the publisher knows exactly what fans are asking for and is willing to point toward next year. The safest reading is that the conversation continues, not that a sequel has been confirmed.
The new roadmap gives current owners a reason to keep the game installed, especially if they enjoy screenshots, sandbox experiments, or community-made content. None of the announced features changes the main campaign today, so there is no need to delay a first playthrough while waiting for them.
The remake is a single-player action RPG set inside a prison colony controlled by rival camps. It offers more than 50 hours of exploration, modernized combat, expanded quests, and a world where NPCs and creatures follow their own routines. You can track its platforms and future updates on the Gothic 1 Remake game page.
Players interested mainly in modding may want to wait. The mod kit needs a proper technical breakdown before anyone can judge how powerful or accessible it will be. Photo Mode fans are in a similar position: the feature is confirmed, but its tools have not been shown.
