God of War: Laufey releases for PS5 on February 16, 2027. Faye is the playable protagonist in a mainline God of War story that begins after her funeral and takes her into the Everywhen, an afterlife where gods and creatures from different mythologies meet.
Santa Monica Studio is combining the close world-building of the Norse games with faster movement inspired by the Greek era. Faye fights with a magical sword, moves between ground and air, and uses Jötunn soul powers to separate enemies from their bodies.
This guide covers the confirmed date, platform, story, cast, combat, companions, and the questions PlayStation has not answered yet.
God of War: Laufey Release Date and Platform
God of War: Laufey is scheduled for February 16, 2027, on PlayStation 5. The date appears on PlayStation’s regional game pages and was shared through the official PlayStation account.
PS5 is the only announced platform. Sony has not announced a PS4 version, PC release, or cloud edition. Previous God of War games later reached PC, but that history is not confirmation for Laufey.
Preorders, editions, pricing, and collector bonuses have not been detailed. The PlayStation Store currently supports wishlisting, which is not the same as opening preorders.
The God of War: Laufey game page collects future release and guide updates.
Who Is the Playable Character?
Faye, also known as Laufey, is the playable lead. She is Kratos’ wife, Atreus’ mother, a Jötunn warrior, and the former owner of the Leviathan Axe.
Her death began the story of God of War in 2018, when Kratos and Atreus carried her ashes toward the highest peak in the realms. Ragnarök revealed more of her past and brought Deborah Ann Woll into the role. Laufey now lets players experience her choices directly instead of learning about them through murals and memories.
PlayStation calls Laufey the next mainline entry in the series. That makes it more than a small side story, even though it changes protagonists.

What Is God of War: Laufey About?
Faye awakens after her funeral and discovers that the plans she made to protect Kratos and Atreus are in danger. To save them, she must cross the Everywhen and find a way home.
The Everywhen is described as the birthplace and endpoint of magic. Gods and creatures from different mythologies can exist there together, which gives Santa Monica Studio room to move beyond the Greek and Norse worlds without pretending those stories never happened.
The natural flow of magic has been disrupted, making the realm difficult to escape. Faye must uncover what the Everywhen really is, who is using its power, and why her family’s future depends on what happens after her death.
What Is the Everywhen?
The Everywhen is the afterlife of gods, not another ordinary realm connected to Midgard. It sits above the afterlives of mortals and allows beings from separate mythologies to cross paths.
PlayStation has shown Sekhmet and Begtse as two hostile gods Faye encounters. Sekhmet comes from Egyptian mythology, while Begtse is connected to Mongolian tradition. Their presence supports the idea that the game is opening the series to a wider mythological space.
The realm can also use memories and people from different moments without following normal time. That creates possibilities for the story, but players should not assume every dead God of War character will return.
Faye’s Companions: Phranque and Rue
Faye meets two companions shortly after waking. Phranque is a cosmic cube voiced by Jack Quaid. PlayStation describes him as curious, earnest, and willing to protect his friends and the creatures of the Everywhen.
Rue is an enchanted ribbon guardian voiced by Perlina Lau. She protects a powerful sword and eventually trusts Faye enough to use it during their escape.
The companions give Faye people to speak with during exploration and can explain rules she does not understand. PlayStation has not fully detailed whether they participate in combat like Atreus and Freya or provide another kind of support.

How Faye’s Combat Works
Faye’s style is faster and more mobile than Kratos’ recent combat. Santa Monica Studio says it combines the modern system with classic DNA from the Greek games, letting her move between the ground and air without breaking momentum.
- Sword combat: speed, control, and continuous pressure define her basic weapon style.
- Air movement: Faye can carry combinations upward and reposition without the heavy pauses associated with Kratos.
- Soul magic: her golden palm can detach an enemy’s soul, letting her attack it directly or knock it into other targets.
- Jötunn power: Faye’s abilities come from her role as the Golden Hand, a powerful protector of the Giants.
- Defensive mobility: faster movement gives her more ways to avoid attacks and turn positioning into offense.
The reveal shows only early abilities. Skill trees, upgrades, difficulty settings, weapon switching, armor, and companion commands have not been fully explained.
Who Voices Faye?
Deborah Ann Woll returns as Faye after appearing in God of War Ragnarök. Jack Quaid voices Phranque, and Perlina Lau voices Rue.
PlayStation has not published a complete cast list. The actors for Sekhmet, Begtse, and other gods may be announced closer to release.
Will Kratos and Atreus Appear?
The story is built around protecting Kratos and Atreus, but PlayStation has not confirmed how much they appear or whether either one is playable. Faye’s journey begins after her funeral, while her family remains connected to the plans she left behind.
Comments about a future Kratos-led project refer to the franchise’s longer plan, not proof that Kratos becomes the lead in Laufey. This game is officially centered on Faye.
When Does Laufey Take Place?
The opening occurs after Faye’s funeral, placing it directly beside the beginning of God of War (2018). Because the Everywhen does not follow ordinary time, later parts of the story may connect with events beyond that moment.
You should play God of War (2018) and Ragnarök before Laufey if you want the full emotional context. The new game is built around information about Faye, Kratos, Atreus, the Giants, and Ragnarök that those stories reveal.
What Is Still Unconfirmed?
- PC release: only PS5 is announced.
- Editions and price: PlayStation has not detailed standard, deluxe, or collector options.
- Preorder date: wishlisting is available, but preorders are not open.
- Complete cast: only some lead and companion roles are confirmed.
- Kratos and Atreus gameplay: their involvement in the story does not confirm playable sections.
- Game length: Santa Monica Studio has not announced the campaign size.
