Faye is the main playable character in God of War: Laufey. PlayStation's official store page describes the new adventure as her story, explains her abilities, and tells players they will fight through the Everywhen as Faye. This is a full change of perspective for a series that has spent most of its history following Kratos.
Laufey and Faye are the same person. She is Kratos' wife and Atreus' mother, and she died before the opening of God of War in 2018. Kratos and Atreus spent that game carrying her ashes to the highest peak in the nine realms. Players learned more about her choices later, but they never experienced the journey from her side.
Faye Is the Playable Hero
The official gameplay trailer shows Faye fighting with a sword, moving quickly between enemies, and using abilities that look very different from Kratos' heavy axe attacks. PlayStation describes her combat through speed, control, and relentlessness. Deborah Ann Woll returns as Faye after playing her in God of War Ragnarok.

Kratos may still appear around the larger franchise, but this game is built around Faye. Santa Monica Studio is giving players direct control of the person whose death started the Norse story. Her decisions can now be shown as actions instead of memories, murals, and stories told by other characters.
The Story Starts After Her Death
Faye wakes in the Everywhen after dying in Midgard. The place sits outside ordinary time, so the game can bring together people, creatures, and memories that would not normally meet. Her goal is personal: find a way back to Kratos and Atreus.
That setup gives the game room to explain what Faye knew before the 2018 story began. She understood the Giants, hid important parts of her past, and prepared the path that Kratos and Atreus would follow. Laufey can answer some of those questions while keeping the focus on what she is doing now.

Kratos Is Not Being Replaced
Some of the early reaction treated Faye's game as a sign that Kratos was leaving the series. The projects are separate. Cory Barlog said the next larger God of War installment will return to Kratos and connect with Laufey. Faye gets her own story first, while Kratos remains part of the franchise's future.
That distinction gives Santa Monica Studio more freedom. Laufey can use a faster combat style and explore Faye's history without forcing those ideas into another Kratos game. Players who only know her as a wife, mother, and Giant now get a chance to see the warrior behind those descriptions.
Release Date and Platform
PlayStation announced that God of War: Laufey will launch on PS5 on February 16, 2027. The PlayStation Store page still showed the date as undetermined when checked, but the company's official social account gave the February date directly.
No PC version has been announced. For now, the confirmed release is PS5, with the official gameplay trailer offering the clearest look at how Faye moves, fights, and survives in the Everywhen.
