All American Series Finale Ending Explained: Spencer, Olivia, Billy and the Six-Year Jump

Spoilers for the All American series finale follow. The CW aired “To Live and Die in L.A.” on September 28, ending the drama after eight seasons. Spencer and Olivia get through a frightening delivery, the episode jumps six years ahead, and Billy Baker appears one last time.

Do Spencer and Olivia have their twins?

Yes. Olivia goes into labor early and needs a C-section. Spencer makes it to the hospital in time, and both babies are born safely. Their names are Mary and Corey: Mary honors Olivia’s grandmother, and Corey honors Spencer’s father. Showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll told TVLine that the names were chosen to bring the Baker and James families together.

Spencer also persuades his NFL general manager to trade him to the fictional Los Angeles Robins. The move lets him play in L.A. while raising the twins near their family. After the episode skips ahead six years, he has won a third Super Bowl and retires from football. KJ joins him on the Robins for his final game.

What happens to Jordan, Layla and Coop?

Jordan becomes the head coach at South Crenshaw High and is named the NFL’s High School Head Coach of the Year. He and Layla have a daughter, Monica, named after Layla’s mother. Layla has also built a successful career as a music producer.

Coop becomes a lawyer. Laura Baker swears her in, with Breonna there to celebrate. Amina manages her father’s winning campaign for a council seat in Crenshaw. Khalil, who helps Olivia during her early labor, is in his first year of medical school after the time jump. He and Tori cross paths again outside the hospital.

Who appears in Billy Baker’s final scene?

The last scene puts Spencer and Jordan back on the South Crenshaw football field. They talk about the men and fathers they have become. As they leave, Taye Diggs appears as Billy Baker, watching them from the sideline. The character is still dead; the shot is a final tribute, not a reversal of his story.

Carroll said she wanted Billy present in some form because he helped shape both men. She told TVLine that Diggs agreed almost as soon as she called him about the cameo:

I think it was the fastest “yes” I’ve received in my career.

Carroll also said the crew filmed several versions of Billy’s brief appearance but ended up using the first take. Daniel Ezra directed the finale, which Carroll wrote with Jamie Turner.
