A holiday villa looks inviting until someone asks who actually owns it. Netflix’s new A Couple of Lies trailer, released October 2, follows that worry from a sunny drive in Sicily to questions about the strangers living in someone else’s home. The four-part Swedish thriller arrives on October 30.

The exchange involves two couples, not one family renting an empty holiday property. Helene and Carl leave their home in Stockholm’s archipelago for Scarlett and Adam’s Sicilian villa. Scarlett and Adam get the Swedish house in return. Each pair has handed strangers access to a private life they are already struggling to keep together.

The sunny trip does not stay comfortable

Early footage puts Helene and Carl in a convertible, enjoying the scenery and talking about the house swap. A view of the villa offers the holiday they hoped for. Later, Carl asks another man about its owners. By then, finding out who those people are has become more urgent than admiring the setting.

The trailer includes this instruction:

“You should look into the people that own the house.”

That changes what the exchange means. The couple in Sicily is not simply away from home: another couple is inside their Swedish property while they try to learn more about them. A conversation in a stone courtyard and a tense encounter through a car window add to the sense that the trip has brought Carl into situations he did not expect.

The preview moves between quiet rooms, outdoor conversations and increasingly uneasy looks. It does not need a long chase to make the arrangement feel unsafe. A house can look beautiful while the people responsible for it remain difficult to account for.

Trouble is waiting in both houses

Netflix’s earlier story announcement explains why the couples agreed to the swap: both marriages need help. Several weeks somewhere else are supposed to give them a chance to reconnect. That makes the first doubts awkward. They have traveled to repair their relationships, not to spend the holiday investigating another couple.

The Sicilian property does not quite match the pictures that persuaded Helene and Carl to choose it. Back in Stockholm, Scarlett and Adam find an impressive modern home, but also nosy neighbors and a locked walk-in closet. Those are different problems on opposite sides of the exchange, with each pair missing information the other may have.

The locked room matters for a straightforward reason: staying in a house is not the same as knowing what its owners have kept out of sight. The neighbors add another complication. They already know the household; the visitors do not know what has been said about them or what anyone expects to see.

Keep the two couples straight

Who’s who in the house swap

Frida Gustavsson and Fares Fares play the Swedish couple heading to Sicily. Emma Appleton and Jakob Oftebro play the pair taking their place in Stockholm. Following those destinations helps when the trailer cuts from the villa to the modern house and back again.

The series was filmed in Sweden and Sicily, with production already wrapped when Netflix announced it in December 2025. Its original Swedish title is Bytet. The holiday locations belong to the story’s two households, rather than being an unrelated backdrop for a single couple’s getaway.

Four episodes, starting October 30

Kasper Barfoed directs the adaptation of Stefan Ahnhem’s novel. Amanda Högberg is head writer, with Axel Stjärne also writing; Frida Asp and Fatima Varhos produce for Asp Varhos. The ensemble also includes Diarmuid Noyes, Magnus Krepper, Anna Bjelkerud and Lars Väringer.
