Age of Empires asks you to manage a settlement and an army at the same time. Villagers gather resources, buildings produce units and upgrades, and scouting helps you decide where to defend or attack. Campaigns turn historical settings into missions with their own objectives, while skirmishes and multiplayer let those systems play out on repeatable maps. Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition revisits the medieval strategy classic with a large campaign library, civilization technology trees, and a familiar four-age economy. Age of Empires IV also explores medieval warfare, but gives civilizations more distinct economic rules and age-up systems, including landmark choices for many factions. Neither game requires playing the other first. Start with the learning campaign in Age of Empires II or the tutorial and Art of War challenges in Age of Empires IV, then practice a single civilization before switching repeatedly. The economy, scouting, and counter guides below give you a first routine to build on.
