Age of Empires IV puts village management and military decisions on the same clock. Workers collect food, wood, gold, and stone while scouts search for resources and enemy activity. Advancing through the ages opens stronger units and technologies, but committing resources to an advance can leave a base exposed if an opponent is already attacking.

Civilizations differ in more than their unique units. The English can build an army around Longbowmen, the French field Royal Knights, and the Mongols can relocate buildings. Many civilizations advance by constructing landmarks with different benefits; others use different advancement systems. Learning one civilization first makes it easier to recognize when a strategy depends on that faction's rules.
The base game's campaigns follow the Normans, the Hundred Years War, the Mongol Empire, and the Rise of Moscow. A tutorial, Art of War challenges, and campaign difficulty options offer ways to learn before competitive play. Skirmishes let you choose the map and opponents, while multiplayer includes cooperative matches against AI and battles against other players.
Originally released on PC in 2021, Age of Empires IV later came to Xbox and PlayStation 5. Anniversary Edition is a package of Age of Empires IV, not a separate sequel. Expansion civilizations and campaigns depend on the content you own.
