Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition

Civilizations share many buildings and units, but their bonuses, unique units, and available technologies change which armies they can support. A cavalry opening, an archer force, and a defensive castle position demand different resource commitments. Scouting reveals what an opponent is building so you can prepare counters instead of spending everything on one unit type.

For a first session, the William Wallace learning campaign introduces basic controls and objectives. The Art of War challenges then focus on skills such as economy management and combat. Historical campaigns provide mission-specific armies and goals; skirmishes let you practice a full opening against the AI before joining multiplayer.

The Definitive Edition first launched on Windows PC in 2019 and later reached Xbox and PlayStation 5, with a macOS version released in May 2026. Additional expansions add campaigns and civilizations, so check which content belongs to your edition when following a civilization-specific guide.
