The Uprising is available to buy or rent digitally in the United States from September 29. If you missed Andrew Garfield’s medieval rebellion in theaters, you can now watch it at home without signing up for a streaming subscription. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment says the 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD editions arrive November 3.
The new release is for digital stores, not a subscription premiere. Universal has not announced a date or service where the film will stream as part of a monthly plan. A digital purchase or rental is a separate transaction, and the options shown to you may depend on your retailer and country.
What is the film about?
Set during the English revolt of 1381, Paul Greengrass’s film follows Garfield as the Ploughman, a man who joins a rebellion against King Richard II. Jamie Bell, Thomasin McKenzie, Tom Hollander, Katherine Waterston and Woody Norman are among the cast. It is inspired by the events behind the Robin Hood legend, but it is not a new Robin Hood adventure.
Greengrass wrote and directed the movie. It runs 2 hours and 8 minutes and is rated R in the United States for violence and bloody images. The digital release has the same film seen in theaters; what varies by retailer is which extras are included.
What extras come with the digital release?
Universal lists eight deleted scenes and three behind-the-scenes pieces as bonus features at participating retailers. The deleted scenes include “Ploughman Rallies the Farmers,” “The Rebels at Odds” and “Ploughman and Alyce.” If those moments were what you wanted more of after seeing the film, check the extras list on the store page before paying.
The three featurettes are “Authentically Historic: The Cast of The Uprising,” “Envisioning an Uprising” and “Creating 1381 England.” They cover the cast, the making of the film and the work that went into its medieval setting. Universal says the bonus material is exclusive to participating retailers, so it should not be assumed that every rental or purchase includes all of it.
Is a disc edition coming?
Yes. November 3 is the U.S. date for 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD. Universal’s product page also lists 4K and Blu-ray collector’s editions, including a steelbook, alongside a standard DVD collector’s edition. The formats and packaging differ, so check the listing for the version you want.
The film has a 4K UHD/Blu-ray edition with English Dolby Atmos audio for the feature. Universal lists English, French Canadian and Latin American Spanish among the disc language options. Digital storefront language tracks can differ, so the retailer’s listing is the place to check your preferred audio or subtitles.
For now, the short answer is simple: buy or rent it digitally starting September 29; buy it on disc starting November 3. No subscription-streaming date has been confirmed.
