Shudder has released the official trailer for The Cycle, a new horror film set to premiere Friday, October 23. Police find a corpse beside a horrific crime scene, and their only lead is the dead man’s estranged daughter, played by Deborah Ann Woll. Jeffrey Donovan also stars. The trailer connects the investigation to a secret her father took to the grave, but keeps that secret hidden.

The daughter is left with two absences: a father she was estranged from and a secret he took to the grave. She cannot ask him for context, so the clues around the crime scene must also fill in part of the family story. That gives her investigation a personal stake before the trailer’s stranger images appear, while keeping the actual reveal out of reach.

The preview moves from tense conversations and police work to a few unsettling glimpses: an older woman watching across a room, a figure behind a doorway, and a hand reaching around a wall. Nothing shown makes the connection to the case clear.

“A terrific fright flick — The Thing meets The Silence of the Lambs.” — Stephen King, as presented in Shudder’s trailer

The daughter is the story’s point of entry: every clue about the crime may also change what she knows about her father. Woll leads that search, while Donovan also appears in the cast.

What does the trailer actually reveal?

The trailer gives the setup, not the solution. It shows the daughter as the only lead in the case and hints at danger beyond the crime scene, but does not explain what her father hid or how the images relate to the corpse.

Stephen King’s comparison points to two familiar kinds of suspense: creature horror and a police investigation. The trailer places the family secret between them, without revealing which will dominate the film.
