Lars Eidinger has been reported as Brainiac, giving the film a major comic-book threat without confirming how much of the character’s design or backstory will be shown. DC has kept the project’s public details unusually tight, which makes the cast list more useful than a rumor-filled plot summary.
What is the story about?
Gunn has described a story in which Superman and Lex Luthor work together against a much bigger threat. He has also said the film is as much a Lex movie as a Superman movie. That does not mean the two men have become friends. Their values, history, and methods are still miles apart, which is exactly why the forced partnership has some bite.
The film’s title points toward a direct continuation of the new DCU’s Superman rather than a separate reboot. The first movie introduced Clark as a hero learning how to live in public, while Lex saw Superman as a problem that had to be controlled. Putting them on the same side creates a different kind of pressure: each may need the other without trusting him.

Is Brainiac the main villain?
Lars Eidinger has been linked to Brainiac, but DC has not said whether the character is the film’s only villain or the threat Superman and Lex must face together. Brainiac is one of Superman’s best-known enemies in the comics, so the casting report gives the sequel a recognizable name without revealing the shape of the conflict.
The distinction matters while the movie is still in post-production. A cast report can identify a role, but it cannot tell us how the character will look, how much of the story he controls, or whether the film is adapting one particular comic arc.
