Maisie Williams says she played Antonia Owens as a lesbian in Practical Magic 2, even though the film does not make that part of the character’s life explicit. Her comments concern an acting choice, not a newly announced scene or an extended cut.
“I always played Antonia as a sapphic icon,” Williams said in a recent interview. She described maintaining that approach through different script versions and edits, and said it shaped Antonia’s perspective during conversations about Gideon.
Antonia in the book and the film
Alice Hoffman’s The Book of Magic gives Antonia a female love interest named Ariel. The film adaptation gives less attention to that romance. Williams’s explanation adds context to her performance, but it does not establish why the filmmakers changed the storyline.
Antonia is Sally Owens’s daughter and Kylie’s sister. Sandra Bullock returns as Sally, while Joey King plays Kylie. Nicole Kidman again plays Sally’s sister, Gillian.

Susanne Bier directs Practical Magic 2 from a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman, Georgia Pritchett and Kelly Marcel. The film adapts The Book of Magic and also features Lee Pace, Xolo Maridueña, Solly McLeod, Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing.
Practical Magic 2 is now in theaters. Williams’s comments describe Antonia in this film; they do not confirm a new storyline for a third installment.
