Kyle Chandler credits Peter Berg with giving the Friday Night Lights cast room to act. In reunion remarks published October 3, he remembered arriving prepared, then receiving freedom to perform as the director trusted the actors’ understanding of their characters.
The reunion took place on May 29 at the Paramount Theatre during the ATX TV Festival. It brought actors together with the people who wrote and produced the show. This autumn’s anniversary is a chance to revisit that conversation, not an announcement that the original cast has filmed a new season.
The show changed the setting, not just the format
The story began with H.G. Bissinger’s 1990 nonfiction book about the Permian High football team in Odessa, Texas. Peter Berg directed the 2004 film adaptation before bringing Friday Night Lights to television in 2006. The series moved its early stories to fictional Dillon, where a school football team affects the lives of parents, students and local businesses.
Chandler plays coach Eric Taylor, and Connie Britton plays his wife, Tami, who initially works as a school guidance counselor. Aimee Teegarden plays their daughter, Julie. Their home life runs alongside the pressure on Eric to lead the Dillon Panthers, giving both adults relationships beyond the football field.
The freedom Chandler describes started with preparation
Berg asked actors to know their lines and characters, then be willing to change the performance. Chandler described that approach as “the ultimate ability to play.”
For Jason Katims, the showrunner who oversaw its stories, one early question was whether production would stay in Texas. Before joining, he asked the network if the series could shoot there instead of moving to Los Angeles after the pilot.
Katims built stories around the families, too
In an October 2 interview, Katims recalled handling seven or eight stories in an episode. Eric and Tami’s relationship was one part of that work, alongside their roles helping young people. He described Britton and Chandler’s scenes together as a pleasure to write and develop.
Adrianne Palicki’s Tyra Collette became clearer to him when a scene showed her home and family. That helped him understand the character beyond her first appearances. Katims also remembered realizing that stories about parents, children and siblings could carry an episode without football practice or a game.
The locations sometimes made that approach difficult. For the first-season episode “Mud Bowl,” Katims insisted on staging a game in a cow pasture rather than a school field. The crew had to work out practical problems such as lighting, seating and parking. He also recalled filming a church scene in a real church with its congregation.
Friday Night Lights: the families and players

The early ensemble includes Taylor Kitsch as Tim Riggins, Zach Gilford as Matt Saracen, Minka Kelly as Lyla Garrity and Scott Porter as Jason Street. Jesse Plemons plays Landry Clarke. The actors’ main-cast runs differ: Kelly’s covers Seasons 1–3, while Plemons’s covers Seasons 1–4.
Gaius Charles is also part of the original ensemble.
Michael B. Jordan joined as Vince Howard in Seasons 4 and 5, when the story shifted toward East Dillon High and the Lions. He belongs to the later cast, not the original pilot lineup. The change of school also gave the series another group of students and families to follow.
The anniversary includes recognition for the people behind it
Chandler won the 2011 Primetime Emmy for lead actor in a drama for playing Eric. Britton was nominated for lead actress in both 2010 and 2011, while Katims won the 2011 writing award for “Always.” The series also won a casting Emmy in 2007, with Linda Lowy, John Brace and Beth Sepko credited for assembling its actors.
The May reunion was organized around the festival’s Texas Made Award, presented with Media for Texas. The honor recognizes productions that support local film and television work. Friday Night Lights was filmed in Austin, so the reunion returned the cast and creative team to the area where they had made the series.
Chandler and Britton have different new projects
Chandler now plays veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan in Lanterns, opposite Aaron Pierre as new recruit John Stewart. Their investigation takes place in the American heartland. The HBO series also stars Kelly Macdonald, and its U.S. streaming home is HBO Max.
Britton stars with Sam Nivola in Phony, a coming-of-age mystery about a teenager who thinks his mother has been replaced after a car accident. She is also an executive producer. The series is a separate project from Friday Night Lights and is scheduled to premiere on Hulu on October 20, 2026.
For viewers returning to the original drama, all five seasons and 76 episodes are listed in the current U.S. Paramount+ catalogue. A subscription covers the completed series, including its later East Dillon seasons.
