Fallout 76 made Infestations tougher and easier to track in its July 21 update. The biggest change is a boss rebalance aimed at large groups, but Bethesda also added server-wide alerts, reduced the initial search area, increased ammunition drops, and lowered the chance of regular enemies dropping Legendary items.
Infestations remain the same roaming endgame activity introduced in June. They can take over locations across Appalachia, replace the usual enemies with a stronger faction, and end with an elite boss carrying a unique weapon. The July update changes how quickly players find those events and where the best rewards are concentrated.
Every Fallout 76 Infestation Change in the July Update
- Harder bosses for large groups: Bethesda rebalanced Infestation bosses to make them more challenging when many players arrive for the fight.
- Server-wide alerts: Everyone on the server now receives a message when an Infestation appears and when it has been cleared.
- Smaller search area: The first highlighted area on the map has been reduced, so players have less ground to cover before locating the event.
- More ammunition: Infestation enemies now drop a larger amount of ammo.
- Fewer random Legendary drops: Common enemies inside an Infestation are less likely to drop Legendary items.
The update also fixes several rough edges. Enemies should no longer detect a player immediately after Fast Travel, unarmed melee enemies should attack correctly, unarmed Protectrons should fight, and floating Super Mutants now explode when defeated. Bethesda also corrected map, audio, model-color, and tracked-challenge problems tied to the activity.
How Much Harder Are the Bosses?
Bethesda did not publish exact health, damage, or scaling numbers in the update notes. The confirmed target is the large-group experience: bosses should no longer disappear as quickly when a crowded server reaches the same event.
A solo player or small team should not assume every boss received a flat difficulty increase at all group sizes. The public notes only say bosses were rebalanced for large groups. Until players test the live scaling across different party sizes, any exact claim about solo health or damage would be guesswork.
Are Infestations Better for Legendary Farming?
The July changes move more of the reward value toward the boss. Ordinary Infestation enemies now have a lower chance to drop Legendary items, while the activity still leads to a boss with a unique weapon and the larger rewards attached to a clear.
For farming, the clean approach is to locate the Infestation quickly, clear the required enemies, and make sure you participate in the boss fight. Spending extra time clearing every common enemy is less attractive if your main goal is Legendary loot, although the increased ammunition drops can help pay back some of the resources used during the event.
How Infestations Work
- They can appear across the Toxic Valley, Forest, Ash Heap, Savage Divide, Mire, and Cranberry Bog.
- The usual enemies at a location are replaced by a stronger invading faction.
- An elite boss leads the event and can carry a random Mutation.
- Bosses have their own unique weapons, while the activity is also a source of 4-Star Legendary rewards.
- Multiple Infestations can be active on one server, and an uncleared group may leave for another location.
The new server message removes some of the reliance on repeatedly checking the map. Once the alert appears, the smaller search zone should also make it easier to find the exact activity before another group finishes it.
More Infestation Changes Are Planned for Fall
Bethesda says more changes are planned for the fall update. Earlier public testing described a new objective that would require players to find and defeat Infestation enemies before the boss appears. The studio also tested corpse highlighting, a smoke marker on the map, a notification toggle, free Fast Travel to teammates already in an Infestation, and removing Morgantown from the location rotation.
Those fall features were described as tentative during testing. They should not be treated as live until Bethesda includes them in final release notes. The boss rebalance, alerts, smaller search area, ammo increase, and Legendary drop adjustment are already part of the July 21 update.
What Players Should Do Now
Join an Exploration Public Team if you want more chances to reach an Infestation before it ends. Watch for the new server alert, use the reduced map area to locate the event, and arrive prepared for a boss that can last longer when the server is crowded.
If you are farming rewards, prioritize completing the activity instead of expecting regular enemies to carry the same Legendary value as before. The new balance makes the final fight more important and gives large groups a better chance to experience the encounter instead of deleting the boss immediately.
Bethesda lists the live changes in the July 21 update notes, while the original Infestations release notes explain the activity and its rewards.
