Adam Driver Is Mister Sinister in Marvel's X-Men

Deadline reports that the film will open May 5, 2028. Jake Schreier, who directed Thunderbolts*, is leading the movie. Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and The Bear co-showrunner Joanna Calo are working on the screenplay, according to AP.

Mister Sinister Makes Cyclops Part of the Conflict

Mister Sinister’s name is a title, not the one he was born with. Marvel’s official character profile identifies him as Nathaniel Essex, a scientist who pushed genetic experimentation far beyond any moral boundary. Nathaniel Milbury is one of the identities he has used, which is why Driver chose it for the D23 reveal.

In the comics, Sinister studies mutant bloodlines, creates clones, alters bodies, and treats people as material for his experiments. His powers and methods vary across decades of stories, but his interest in the Summers family is unusually consistent.

Marvel’s history of the character traces his manipulation of Scott Summers and Scott’s brother, Alex, back to their childhood. That connection gives Connor’s Cyclops a reason to be more than the team’s field leader: Sinister can make the central threat personal before the X-Men understand how long he has been watching them.

Choosing Sinister also lets Marvel avoid rebuilding its first movie around the same Xavier-versus-Magneto conflict that powered much of Fox’s series. Magneto can still exist in this world; Marvel has not announced who will play him or when he will appear. For the opening film, Sinister offers a different kind of danger—less public revolution, more private violation.

The Cast Is Official, but the Movie Is Still Mostly Hidden

Marvel has not shown costumes, footage, a plot synopsis, or Driver’s Sinister design. It has not said whether Emma Frost begins as an ally, an opponent, or something between those positions. It has not announced Beast, Iceman, Nightcrawler, Magneto, Mystique, Wolverine, or any other expected mutant.

The seven confirmed roles still suggest a direction. Professor X has a young core team. Cyclops and Jean Grey are present together. Rogue and Storm broaden the group beyond the original comic lineup. Emma Frost brings a character who can challenge Xavier from inside or outside his school. Sinister gives all of them an enemy interested in what they are, not simply what they believe.

That is enough to make the casting reveal more than a row of famous names. Marvel has chosen a villain who can threaten the team’s bodies, families, and identities while leaving the familiar Magneto argument for another day. Now Schreier’s film has to turn that promise into characters worth following when X-Men reaches theaters on May 5, 2028.
