Spelunky sends a small explorer into caves that change between runs. Your goal is to descend, gather treasure and reach the next exit without losing every heart. Monsters, pits and traps turn the route into a series of choices: when to jump, when to take a safer detour, and whether a bomb or rope is worth spending. Dying ends that run, but the next cave layout gives you another chance to learn.

This profile covers the colorful HD game that debuted on Xbox Live Arcade on July 4, 2012. Derek Yu’s earlier freeware Spelunky is a separate 2008-era version; Spelunky 2 is a later sequel. The Windows release shown by the Steam media followed in 2013, so its product date is not the Xbox debut. The gallery shows the resources at the top left, a bomb blast, a climb, a shop price, a dark cave and the in-game journal. Our linked first-run guide uses these exact images to show where to look before spending a bomb or taking an item.

Mossmouth developed the HD version, and the original Xbox listing credits Microsoft Studios as publisher. The U.S. ESRB entry for Spelunky on Xbox rates it T (Teen) for Blood, Fantasy Violence and Mild Suggestive Themes.
