Peter does ask for help. The team simply considers his crisis too small compared with the world-ending events it is responsible for handling. That leaves Spider-Man to protect ordinary New Yorkers while the Avengers save their resources for invasions, cosmic threats, and disasters that could affect the entire planet.
Yelena Belova Gives Peter the Answer
After an attack on the prison holding Scorpion, Peter follows his investigation to a Russian spa. There he meets Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, who became part of the New Avengers at the end of Thunderbolts*. Yelena explains the Avengers’ priorities with a potato comparison. An alien invasion threatening the world is a big potato. A local criminal using mind-controlled people to steal an armored vehicle is a small potato. Peter’s problem is dangerous, but it has not reached the level that would make the full team step in.
The scene is played for comedy, but it establishes how the current Avengers choose their missions. They are not waiting to solve every crime involving a powered person. They are working as an emergency team for threats that individual heroes, police, or local agencies cannot reasonably contain.
The Avengers Are Treating Spider-Man as a Local Hero
