Watch Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn – Part 1, and Breaking Dawn – Part 2 in that order. The five movies follow one continuing story, so their release order also gives you the main events in sequence. Midnight Sun is a separate retelling of the beginning, not a sixth movie to add after the finale.

All five Twilight movies in release order

  1. Twilight (2008): Bella moves to Forks and meets Edward Cullen. Start here for their relationship and the introduction to his vampire family.
  2. The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009): Bella and Edward's separation brings Jacob Black further into the story. It is the second chapter, not a spin-off about a different couple.
  3. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010): the tension between Edward and Jacob continues as a new vampire threat forces an uneasy alliance.
  4. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 (2011): Bella and Edward's marriage begins the two-part conclusion, with decisions that directly set up the final film.
  5. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (2012): the Cullen family faces the Volturi. Watch it after Part 1; the opening assumes you know what happened there.

For a first viewing, avoid trailers or detailed summaries for the last two films. Their premises reveal changes that the earlier movies spend time building toward. The list above gives you the sequence without explaining the ending.

Is there a different chronological order?

You do not need to rearrange the five films. Flashbacks provide background inside the movies, but none of those scenes turns an entire later installment into a prequel. Starting with Breaking Dawn or swapping New Moon and Eclipse would interrupt Bella's story.

Release order is also the practical choice for a rewatch with someone new to the saga. You can discuss the books afterward without stopping the films to explain relationships or incidents that have not happened yet.

Who are Bella, Edward, and Jacob?

  • Bella Swan — Kristen Stewart plays the newcomer to Forks whose relationship with Edward connects her human life to the vampire world.
  • Edward Cullen — Robert Pattinson plays Bella's vampire love interest. His family avoids feeding on humans, but being close to them still exposes Bella to danger.
  • Jacob Black — Taylor Lautner plays Bella's friend and Edward's romantic rival. His role becomes much larger in New Moon.

The relationship labels “Team Edward” and “Team Jacob” refer to those competing romances. They are fan preferences, not separate versions of the films or alternate endings you need to find.

Why are there five movies but four main books?

The central novel sequence is Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn. The last book was adapted in two parts. If you are reading alongside the films, finish Breaking Dawn before treating its two movies as separate stories: both belong to the same novel.

Extra books do not change that four-book route through Bella's main story. Midnight Sun returns to the first book's events through Edward's thoughts, so it works as a companion reading rather than the next chapter after Breaking Dawn.

Is Midnight Sun a new Twilight movie?

Netflix announced Midnight Sun as an animated series in development, based on Meyer's 2020 novel. Sinead Daly is attached as writer and executive producer, with Meyer also executive producing. The announcement describes Edward's perspective on the original Twilight story.

The official announcement checked for this guide does not provide a premiere date or a voice cast. Do not mistake a fan trailer, the 2025 anniversary screenings, or an old movie clip for a confirmed new feature film. The five released movies remain the complete live-action viewing sequence.

How to split a Twilight rewatch

  • Five evenings: watch one film each night. This keeps every installment intact and gives you time to compare its events with the corresponding book.
  • Three sessions: pair Twilight with New Moon, watch Eclipse on its own, then keep both Breaking Dawn films together for the conclusion.

Check the full title before renting or buying, especially the Part 1 and Part 2 labels. Streaming availability varies by country and subscription, so an old platform announcement is not a guarantee that all five films are included in your account today.
