Turnstile has one simple request to answer before its Saturday Night Live debut: please do not wreck the set. Dakota Johnson puts the question to the band in SNL’s new promo. The musicians pause long enough for her to ask again, then a third time, before replying together.

“Yes, Dakota.”

It is an unusually restrained answer for a hardcore band being introduced with a joke about chaos. Johnson hosts the October 3 episode, with Turnstile appearing as musical guest for the first time. Ben Marshall joins them in the 96-second promo, which keeps finding different ways to make that combination awkward.

The band answers together — every time

The first bit starts with Marshall congratulating Turnstile on its Grammys. The band’s reply comes in unison. When he asks whether they always talk that way, they deny it together, too. They can answer the question, but they cannot stop demonstrating the behavior he is asking about.

Another take gives Marshall an extravagant farewell after an ordinary host-and-musical-guest introduction. He treats a few seconds of promotional work as an enormous personal achievement, thanks everyone and says good night. The others are left responding politely to a sign-off that arrived much too early.

Those little pauses make the promo funny before anyone mentions a mosh pit. The band stays mostly still while Johnson and Marshall do the talking. The contrast is between the music people expect from Turnstile and the quiet, coordinated group standing in front of the camera.

Johnson wants to mosh; Marshall has a lamp problem

The set-destruction bit brings up Fear’s 1981 appearance as part of the promo’s setup. Johnson and Marshall describe a disastrous visit, then Johnson asks whether Turnstile plans to repeat it. The band’s delayed answer turns a routine reassurance into the punch line. It is a scripted promotional joke, not a warning about what will happen during the live show.

The final exchange lets Johnson sound much more eager to join in. Asked whether she is ready to thrash out with the band, she says she plans to:

“form a wall of death.”

Marshall says his doctor will not let him mosh because he falls over too easily. His explanation compares his center of gravity to an IKEA lamp. The joke shifts from the band’s supposed ability to cause trouble to his own inability to stay upright. Nobody in the promo needs to demonstrate it by actually crashing into anyone.

Who’s who in the SNL promo

There really are Grammys to congratulate

The awards in the opening exchange are not invented for the gag. Turnstile won two Grammys in 2026: Best Rock Album for NEVER ENOUGH and Best Metal Performance for BIRDS. The Recording Academy lists both wins on the band’s official artist page.

That gives Marshall’s congratulations a real starting point before the conversation becomes strange. It also makes the SNL booking more than a chance for the show to borrow a loud-band stereotype. Turnstile arrives with a Grammy-winning album and song, while making its first appearance on this particular television stage.

NBC’s announcement identifies the band as the musical guest for October 3 and says it had started the North American leg of the NEVER ENOUGH Tour Pt. 2. It does not announce which songs the group will play on SNL. The promo is a set of comedy introductions, not footage of a completed musical performance or a confirmed set list.

When the live episode starts

Johnson’s October 3 appearance is her third time hosting SNL. In the United States, the program is scheduled for 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC, with a live stream on Peacock. The episode is still ahead at the time of publication.

For now, the band has promised to behave and Johnson has volunteered for the mosh pit. Marshall has supplied his medical excuse. The actual songs — and whether any of that promo energy reaches the live broadcast — will have to wait until Saturday night.
