Paramount Pictures has released a new trailer for Street Fighter, and this one finally gives the movie a clear center: Ryu and Ken’s broken friendship. The earlier marketing leaned on the size of the cast. The September 1 trailer spends more time showing why these two fighters have to get back in the same fight.
The live-action movie still arrives in theaters on October 16, 2026. It is set in 1993 and follows Ryu, Ken Masters, and Chun-Li into the World Warrior Tournament, but the new footage makes the rivalry between the two former friends the part to watch.
What does the new Street Fighter trailer show?
The trailer opens with Ryu and Ken on opposite sides of a fight. Ken says he has spent years living in Ryu’s shadow, while Ryu has walked away from the life they once shared. Chun-Li comes looking for Ryu when Ken is in danger, giving him a reason to return to a tournament he no longer wants.
That setup is simple, which helps. Street Fighter has a large cast and a lot of game history to fit into one movie, so the trailer needs a relationship that can carry the plot between fights. Ryu and Ken give it one without requiring a new viewer to know every character on the roster.
Is Ryu becoming Evil Ryu?
The footage suggests that Ryu is struggling with the Satsui no Hado, the destructive force tied to the darker side of his fighting power. A purple fireball and flashes of anger make that reading hard to miss, but the film has not officially called this version of Ryu “Evil Ryu.” That label remains a fan and trailer interpretation.
The new conflict gives Ryu something more personal to fight than a tournament bracket. He is trying to help Ken while also keeping control of the power that could make him dangerous to everyone around him.
The tournament brings the game’s moves to the screen
The trailer is not shy about the arcade references. E. Honda uses the Hundred Hand Slap and Sumo Headbutt against Ryu, who answers with a Tatsumaki. Chun-Li gets a burst of rapid kicks, and the footage gives Akuma, Guile, Dan, Vega, Balrog, Cammy, and Blanka their own quick moments.
Those moves are more than small Easter eggs. They show how the film plans to translate attacks that were designed for a fighting game into physical action. The trailer does not explain every effect, but it lets the techniques read quickly even when the scene is moving fast.
The movie still wants to be funny
Street Fighter does not stay serious for long. After the trailer builds the tension between Ryu and Ken, it cuts to the broad tournament humor the franchise is known for. Guile and Dan get a comic exchange, and the final moments lean into the strange spectacle of a movie where a serious martial-arts argument can sit beside a character smashing a car.
That tonal switch will decide whether the film works. A completely straight version would fight the games’ personality, while nonstop jokes would make the Ryu and Ken conflict feel disposable. The new trailer is at least showing both sides instead of pretending the movie is only one of them.

Andrew Koji plays Ryu, Noah Centineo plays Ken Masters, and Callina Liang plays Chun-Li. David Dastmalchian is M. Bison, Jason Momoa is Blanka, Cody Rhodes is Guile, Roman Reigns is Akuma, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is Balrog, and Olivier Richters is Zangief. The wider cast also includes Mel Jarnson as Cammy, Hirooki Goto as E. Honda, Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim, Orville Peck as Vega, Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki, and Eric André as Don Sauvage.
Kitao Sakurai directs the film, which is produced by Legendary Entertainment with Capcom and distributed by Paramount Pictures. The movie is based on Capcom’s Street Fighter game series and is not a continuation of the 1994 adaptation.
When does Street Fighter hit theaters?
Street Fighter opens in theaters on October 16, 2026. Paramount has announced a theatrical release, and the film was made for IMAX. The new trailer does not announce a streaming date or a home-release window.

What the trailer still keeps hidden
The trailer shows the tournament and hints at a conspiracy involving M. Bison, but it does not explain the full plan, the exact reason Ken and Ryu split, or how far Ryu’s connection to the Satsui no Hado will go. It also gives the rest of the roster only short introductions, so the film will have to choose carefully where its attention goes.
The new footage does not prove that Street Fighter will be a great movie. It does give the adaptation a more workable shape: two old friends, a dangerous tournament, familiar moves, and enough self-awareness to let the whole thing be strange. For this franchise, that is a better promise than a trailer that only lines up famous names.
