Scott Pilgrim EX received two separate releases on August 27: Back in the Band is a paid $3.99 DLC that adds Stephen Stills, Kim Pine, and Knives Chau as playable fighters, while Coin-Op Chaos is a free title update for every base-game owner. The free update’s main feature is Arcade Mode, which supports solo play or up to four players locally or online.

Back in the Band and Coin-Op Chaos at a glance

  • Release date: both launched August 27, 2026.
  • Paid DLC: Back in the Band costs $3.99 in the US and requires Scott Pilgrim EX.
  • Playable characters: Stephen Stills, Kim Pine, and Knives Chau.
  • New assists: Joseph, Hollie, and Mr. Chau.
  • Free update: Coin-Op Chaos adds Arcade Mode and a three-slot save system.
  • Arcade co-op: solo or up to four players through local co-op or online multiplayer, with cross-platform support and drop-in/out.

Do you need to buy the DLC for Arcade Mode?

No. Arcade Mode belongs to the free Coin-Op Chaos title update, not the paid character pack. If you already own Scott Pilgrim EX, updating the game is enough to access the arcade-style run. Back in the Band is required only if you want to select Stephen, Kim, or Knives and use the DLC-specific additions.

That distinction matters because the two releases are promoted together. The $3.99 price applies to Back in the Band; it is not an access fee for Arcade Mode. Storefront prices can vary by country, but Steam and Xbox both list $3.99 in the US, and Nintendo lists the same regular US price.

What Back in the Band adds

Back in the Band completes the Sex Bob-omb lineup with alternate versions of Stephen Stills, Kim Pine, and Knives Chau. They are not cosmetic swaps. Tribute Games built three different combat identities, along with character-specific techniques, supers, combos, and alternate palettes.

  • Stephen Stills: an aggressive rushdown fighter who stays close with guitar swings, feedback, and pressure-heavy attacks.
  • Kim Pine: a hard-hitting mix-up fighter using drumsticks, stomping breakdowns, and explosive drum solos.
  • Knives Chau: a fast hit-and-run specialist built around acrobatics, shadow techniques, quick blade strikes, and her battle scarf.

How the three new assists work

The DLC also adds Joseph, Hollie, and Mr. Chau as assist characters. Joseph creates a wall of sound that sends projectiles across the battlefield. Hollie uses a remote to hold enemies inside a repeated barrage, creating room for a follow-up. Mr. Chau summons shadow-clone support that can turn a single opening into multiple hits.

Assists are strategic tools rather than extra player slots. Their value depends on the selected fighter and the situation: Joseph can control space, Hollie can extend a setup, and Mr. Chau can add pressure. The three playable fighters remain the headline purchase; the assists broaden how the existing roster can build combos.

How Coin-Op Chaos Arcade Mode works

Arcade Mode condenses the base game into a faster stage-to-stage run inspired by classic coin-op brawlers. It uses lives, credits, a timer, and score chasing instead of the ordinary adventure structure. Players revisit major locations, bosses, and encounters while trying to earn extra lives, beat the clock, and place on local rankings.

The mode can be played alone or with up to four players. Tribute Games lists local co-op, online multiplayer, full cross-platform support, and drop-in or drop-out play, so a group can change during a run without restarting the action. The update also adds three save slots and an Online Save that can be copied into a slot to continue progress from an online game.

Platforms and base-game requirement

Back in the Band requires the Scott Pilgrim EX base game. The DLC is available on PC through Steam, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Official Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, and Steam listings all identify it as add-on content rather than a standalone game.

The base game launched in March 2026 and supports up to four players locally or online. A digital purchase does not transfer automatically between platform storefronts, so buy the DLC on the same platform family where you own Scott Pilgrim EX. Online play can also require the platform’s network subscription.

What if you do not own Scott Pilgrim EX?

Scott Pilgrim EX is a separate action-adventure brawler developed and published by Tribute Games. Its original playable lineup includes Scott Pilgrim, Ramona Flowers, Matthew Patel, Gideon Graves, Lucas Lee, Roxie Richter, and Robot-01. The story moves across a fractured Toronto, with interconnected stages, quests, upgrades, local co-op, and online co-op.

The Scott Pilgrim EX game page keeps the release status, supported platforms, official trailer, and related coverage together as Tribute Games expands the roster.

Is Back in the Band worth buying?

The value is straightforward: the paid pack is for players who want three additional fighting styles and the new assists. Someone interested only in the score-driven Arcade Mode can skip the DLC and install the free update. That makes Coin-Op Chaos the lowest-risk reason to return, while Back in the Band is the roster expansion for players who already enjoy experimenting with characters and combo routes.

Before purchasing, check that the add-on is tied to the correct base-game version and account region. The official listings do not describe Back in the Band as a story expansion; its useful content is the three fighters, assists, moves, combos, and palettes. Arcade Mode, save-slot changes, and the broader title-update fixes remain free.
