Owen Wilson is back as Kevin Rawley in Focker-in-Law, the fourth Meet the Parents film. Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, Teri Polo and Blythe Danner also return, while Ariana Grande and Skyler Gisondo join the family story as a couple planning to get married.

Wilson says the reunion came easily

Speaking at the September 30 Los Angeles premiere of Rolling Loud, Wilson said the returning actors settled into their roles without much difficulty. “I think everybody slipped right back in pretty easily.” He also praised John Hamburg’s script and said he enjoyed working with Stiller and De Niro again. The interview was published on October 1.

Kevin returns to a family introduced in 2000

In the original Meet the Parents, Stiller plays Greg Focker, a nurse hoping to propose to his girlfriend, Pam. Polo plays Pam, and De Niro plays her father, Jack Byrnes. Jack is a former CIA agent whose close questioning makes an already nervous first visit much harder for Greg.

Wilson’s Kevin is Pam’s former fiancé, a reminder that Greg is not the first man to join this family. Danner plays Pam’s mother, Dina. Those relationships give the returning actors familiar characters to work with, even though the new film moves the marriage plans to Greg and Pam’s son.

Meet the Fockers followed in 2004, bringing in Greg’s parents, played by Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand. Jay Roach directed both that film and the 2000 original. Little Fockers arrived in 2010 with Paul Weitz directing. Focker-in-Law therefore returns to the family 16 years after its last film.

A new couple brings Greg a different problem

Gisondo plays Henry Focker, Greg and Pam’s now-grown son. Grande plays Olivia Jones, the woman Henry wants to marry. Greg is uneasy about his son’s choice, putting him in the position of questioning an incoming partner after spending the earlier films trying to win over Jack.

Beanie Feldstein and Eduardo Franco are also in the announced cast. Gisondo has worked with Stiller before: he appeared in Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb in 2014. The new family connection follows an earlier collaboration between the actors, rather than their first time sharing a film.

John Hamburg takes over as director

Hamburg wrote and directed Focker-in-Law after co-writing all three previous films. He shares the new film’s story credit with Ilana Glazer and Austen Earl. De Niro and Stiller are also producers, alongside Jane Rosenthal, John Lesher, Roach and Hamburg.

Hamburg’s work with Stiller and Wilson extends beyond the Focker family. He co-wrote Zoolander, the 2001 comedy Stiller directed and starred in. Stiller plays model Derek Zoolander, while Wilson plays rival model Hansel. Christine Taylor plays Matilda, and Will Ferrell plays fashion designer Mugatu. That film is another earlier project connecting the new director with both returning actors.

Wilson also has a new film and a TV return

Rolling Loud opens in U.S. theaters on October 2. Written and directed by Jeremy Garelick, it stars Wilson as a father who takes his 13-year-old son to the Rolling Loud music festival. Matt Rife, Christian Convery and Christine Ko also appear. It is a separate comedy from the Focker family’s next chapter.

Wilson also returns to Stick on Apple TV for its second season, scheduled for November 4. He plays Pryce Cahill, a former professional golfer whose career ended two decades earlier. Pryce becomes a mentor to teenage golfer Santi, played by Peter Dager. Wilson is an executive producer on the series, created by Jason Keller.
