KPop Demon Hunters 2 is being planned for theaters around the world. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos says the sequel will receive a broad global theatrical release when it arrives.
That is a major change from the first film’s streaming-first debut. KPop Demon Hunters later reached theaters through limited sing-along events, but the sequel is being discussed as a full theatrical release from the start.
What did Netflix say about the theatrical release?
“When the KPop Demon Hunters sequel comes, you can expect a very broad theatrical release.” — Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos at Screentime
Sarandos also described the plan as big, broad, and global. Netflix has not named countries, a theater count, or the length of the exclusive theatrical window.
The language points to more than a one-weekend fan event. It suggests that Netflix wants audiences to treat the sequel as a theatrical movie before it becomes a streaming release.
Why is the sequel getting a bigger release?
The first KPop Demon Hunters became Netflix’s most popular film and passed 500 million views, according to the company. HUNTR/X also became a music hit beyond the movie, while the sing-along screenings showed that fans wanted to experience the songs with a crowd.
The franchise is already expanding outside the screen. Netflix House is turning its characters, music, and demon fights into an immersive attraction. A wide theatrical sequel is the largest step yet.
Who is returning for KPop Demon Hunters 2?
Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans are returning to direct. Netflix confirmed the sequel in March as the first project in its multiyear writing and directing partnership with the pair.
Rumi, Mira, and Zoey are expected to remain central to the story, but Netflix has not announced the voice cast for the sequel. Arden Cho, May Hong, and Ji-young Yoo voiced the trio in the original film.
Will it still stream on Netflix?
Yes. The sequel remains a Netflix film. What has not been announced is the path from theaters to streaming: Netflix has not said whether both releases will happen on the same day, whether theaters will get an exclusive window, or how long subscribers may have to wait.
When will the sequel arrive?
Netflix has not announced a public release date. It has also not revealed an official title, first image, trailer, or plot description for the sequel.
Fans now have one concrete change to expect: the next HUNTR/X movie is being built for a worldwide theater run, not only a home-screen premiere.
