Another Matrix movie is still happening, but fans should not expect to see it soon. Warner Bros. Discovery included the next installment in its latest film update and placed it in a section labeled Beyond 2027. The earliest realistic release window is therefore 2028, although the studio has not announced a date.

The update is useful because there has been little public information since Warner Bros. announced the project in 2024. It confirms that the movie remains part of the studio's plans. It does not mean filming is about to begin.

What Warner Bros. Confirmed

In its Q2 2026 shareholder letter, Warner Bros. Discovery listed the next Matrix installment among movies planned for after 2027. The company did not give it a title, release year, cast, or production date.

Many reports call the project The Matrix 5 because it will be the fifth live-action movie in the series. Warner Bros. has not announced that as the official title. For now, it is simply the next Matrix film.

Who Is Making the New Matrix Movie?

Warner Bros. announced in 2024 that Drew Goddard would write and direct the movie. Lana Wachowski, who co-created the series and directed The Matrix Resurrections, is attached as an executive producer.

Goddard wrote The Martian and directed The Cabin in the Woods and Bad Times at the El Royale. This will be the first live-action Matrix movie directed by someone other than Lana or Lilly Wachowski.

Goddard said in a March 2026 interview with Variety that he was still writing the script. That helps explain why Warner Bros. is looking beyond 2027 instead of preparing the movie for an earlier release.
