Is Keanu Reeves Returning as Neo?

There is no confirmed cast. When Goddard was asked about returning actors, he did not say whether Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne, or anyone else from the earlier movies would appear.

Reeves and Moss returned as Neo and Trinity in The Matrix Resurrections, which ended with both characters alive and able to reshape the Matrix together. A direct sequel could continue their story, but the new movie could also focus on different characters. Warner Bros. has not chosen either direction publicly.

Is It a Sequel or a Reboot?

Warner Bros. originally said Goddard brought the studio an idea that could extend the Matrix world while respecting what came before. That description leaves several options open. It could follow Resurrections, introduce a new group inside the same continuity, or combine familiar characters with a younger cast.

There is no official plot summary, so claims about a full reboot, a new version of Neo, or a multiverse story are theories. The same applies to online suggestions involving Will Smith. No official source has connected him to this movie.

The series has already shown that it can tell stories without keeping Neo at the center. The Animatrix explored other people and different periods in the war between humans and machines. Resurrections also introduced Bugs, played by Jessica Henwick, and a new version of Morpheus, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Either character could return, but neither actor has been confirmed.

Viewers should also expect the movie to recognize the earlier films in some form. Warner Bros. described Goddard's idea as an addition to the universe, not a remake of the 1999 original.
