La Bola Negra has won the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival People’s Choice Award, giving directors Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo another major prize before the movie reaches theaters.
The Spanish drama finished ahead of first runner-up I Play Rocky and second runner-up Being Heumann. TIFF’s main audience award is decided by festival voters rather than a jury.
A story told across three generations
La Bola Negra follows the lives of three gay men from different generations. Their experiences are connected through desire, pain, love and the pressure to live honestly when the world around them makes that difficult.
The cast includes Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardeau, Carlos González, Milo Quifes, Lola Dueñas, Julio Torres, Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close. The teaser moves between intimate relationships, formal gatherings and moments of isolation instead of presenting the story as one conventional romance.
Ambrossi and Calvo are widely known together as Los Javis. Earlier this year, they shared the best director prize at Cannes with Paweł Pawlikowski, who won for Fatherland. The Toronto audience prize now adds a public vote to the film’s festival record.
The directors said the response meant more because the movie is personal to them. “This is a deeply personal film but it also carries a message of the importance and necessity of expressing who you are,” they said. “Knowing that audiences connected with it and made it their own is the greatest gift we could receive.”
The runners-up covered very different stories
I Play Rocky, the first runner-up, looks at the making of the original Rocky and the fight to keep Sylvester Stallone in the starring role. Being Heumann, the second runner-up, tells the story of disability-rights activist Judy Heumann.
Those results put a Spanish queer drama ahead of a Hollywood origin story and a biographical drama. The award does not predict every future prize, but it shows that La Bola Negra connected with the people who watched it in Toronto.
TIFF’s audience winner often leaves the festival with stronger attention going into awards season. The prize is especially useful for a film that still has a theatrical opening and streaming release ahead of it.
When La Bola Negra will be released
La Bola Negra is scheduled to open in theaters on October 16. Netflix will begin streaming it on December 2.
Netflix acquired the film after its Cannes premiere. The gap between the theatrical and streaming dates gives audiences a chance to see it on the big screen before it becomes available at home.
The TIFF win arrives less than a month before that theatrical release. The next test will be whether the strong festival reaction follows the movie beyond Toronto, first into cinemas and then to Netflix viewers around the world.
