Warner Bros. announced the project in 2024 after Drew Goddard brought the studio a new idea for the Matrix universe. Goddard is attached to write and direct, while Lana Wachowski remains involved as an executive producer.

In a September 2026 KCRW interview, Lilly Wachowski said Goddard does not want to move forward unless he receives the sisters’ blessing. Lilly also described herself as largely finished with The Matrix. No public source has confirmed whether that creative approval has been granted or denied.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s August 2026 shareholder letter still places the next Matrix installment in its Beyond 2027 slate. That is a planning window, not a confirmed 2028 release date. The studio has not revealed an official title, story, cast, production start or release date.
