Meriwether told Variety that “there are no scripts” for a New Girl reunion. She added that she does not even have the scripts written for the projects that currently need them. Her comments put the brakes on the idea that a finished reunion story is waiting for the cast to film it.
She did not say New Girl can never return. Meriwether said she has enjoyed the back-and-forth with the actors and joked that the short videos they keep posting might be the reunion. That was a comment about the online bit, not an announcement of a digital series.
Why did fans think a revival was already written?
The confusion started with Greenfield’s July 31 appearance on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle. Asked about a possible return, the actor said, “As far as I know, it’s happening,” and said he had seen scripts written by Meriwether. He was speaking from his own understanding of the situation, not from an announcement by Fox, Peacock, or another studio.
Meriwether also joined the joke online. Her Instagram video pretended that the cast had given her increasingly strange notes on the reunion scripts. The tone was deliberately silly, so the pretend requests should not be treated as details from a real draft.
Greenfield later explained the mix-up
Greenfield later told Variety that he had misread an email. He saw the subject line “New Girl Reunion” and assumed it referred to a television project. It referred to the cast’s upcoming appearance at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball instead.
That explains how a real cast gathering became a story about finished episodes. It also leaves Greenfield’s original claim about seeing scripts without a confirmed project behind it. Meriwether’s current statement is the clearest update: no reunion scripts exist right now.
The confirmed reunion is a charity event
Zooey Deschanel, Greenfield, Jake Johnson, Lamorne Morris, Hannah Simone, and Damon Wayans Jr. are scheduled to reunite at the 2026 Chrysalis Butterfly Ball in Los Angeles on October 10. Greenfield will host, and the cast will receive the event’s first Rising Phoenix Award.
Chrysalis is a nonprofit that helps people find work and rebuild their lives. The award connects that mission to New Girl’s recurring stories about people starting over. Fans can expect the original cast in the same room, but the announcement does not promise a filmed scene, a table read, or a new story for the characters.
New Girl ended after seven seasons
New Girl premiered on Fox in 2011 and ended in 2018 after seven seasons. Deschanel played Jess Day, a teacher who moves into a Los Angeles loft with Nick Miller, Schmidt, and Winston Bishop after a breakup. The show built its audience around the roommates’ friendships, romances, and increasingly strange arguments over the loft’s rules.
Could New Girl still come back?
Yes, in theory. Meriwether’s comments do not close the door forever, and the cast clearly remains comfortable joking with one another. But there is no current script, no announced buyer, no release plan, and no production schedule. The October gala should not be presented as proof that any of those pieces are in place.
For now, fans have an actual cast reunion to look forward to and a lot of playful videos to rewatch. A new episode would require Meriwether to decide that there is another story worth writing, followed by the usual negotiations and scheduling. None of that has happened yet.
