Abbott had just been announced as Professor Charles Xavier in Marvel Studios’ new X-Men movie. The actor now laughs about trying to adjust his energy while thousands of people were still working out who they were looking at.

Abbott said he began walking out enthusiastically and then became more restrained when the response felt muted. He had considered a fist pump, abandoned it, and settled for a nod.

Who is Christopher Abbott?
Abbott first drew broad attention as Charlie in Girls. His later work includes Possessor, It Comes at Night, Catch-22, Wolf Man, and East of Eden. He often plays guarded, unstable, or physically worn-down characters rather than traditional blockbuster heroes.
Professor X gives him a different scale, but not a completely different kind of role. Charles Xavier can be warm, controlling, idealistic, secretive, and politically calculating in the same story. Abbott’s casting suggests Marvel is interested in those contradictions, not only the polished school founder seen in earlier films.
He also follows Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy, two actors closely tied to the character. Marvel chose a less obvious successor instead of casting someone who already looks or sounds like either version.

Marvel announced Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Scott Summers, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm, and Adam Driver as Nathaniel Milbury. Jake Schreier is directing.
The movie is scheduled for May 5, 2028. Marvel has not released a trailer or a full story summary. Abbott’s reveal may have started with a nervous walk, but the casting gives the new X-Men a Professor X who does not arrive with an old version’s shadow already built around him.
