Universal has set Snoop, its Snoop Dogg biopic, for a wide theatrical release on August 6, 2027. Jonathan Daviss will play Snoop Dogg, and the rapper has already made one promise about the movie’s tone: he says it will be rated R. The studio’s announcement confirms the casting, the date, and Craig Brewer as director. The rating promise came earlier at CinemaCon, so the final Motion Picture Association classification is still a separate step.
That gives the project a clearer shape than it had when Universal first announced the biopic. It has a lead actor, a director, a theatrical date, and a version of the story that Snoop does not want softened for a younger audience.
Jonathan Daviss is taking the lead
Daviss is best known for playing Pope Heyward in Netflix’s Outer Banks, the strategist of the Pogues. He also appeared in the Netflix film Do Revenge. Variety reported that Daviss landed the starring role in Universal’s project, which was still untitled at the time. The later NBCUniversal announcement identifies the movie as Snoop and confirms that Daviss will play the titular rapper.
The casting was introduced at CinemaCon with Daviss and Snoop on the same stage. That pairing gives the film an obvious audience-facing image, but it does not tell us how much of Daviss’s performance will rely on physical imitation, a changed voice, or a more understated approach. No footage has been released yet.

Snoop says the movie will be R-rated
At CinemaCon in April, Snoop said the film would be rated R and told the audience to get their parents’ permission. Complex reported that the comment was part of his presentation with Daviss and Craig Brewer. Snoop also said he wanted to tell the story without watering down the rougher parts of his past.
