House of the Dragon Season 4 is coming in 2028. HBO has not announced a month or exact date, but the fourth season will end the Game of Thrones prequel.

Season 3 ended on August 9, 2026, leaving viewers with another long break. The series has followed the same pattern before: Season 1 arrived in 2022, Season 2 in 2024, and Season 3 in 2026.

When will House of the Dragon Season 4 be released?

HBO has only confirmed a 2028 release window. Any specific month or day circulating online is speculation.

The network renewed House of the Dragon for Season 4 in November 2025 as part of a plan to release new Game of Thrones shows every year through 2028. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is expected to cover the franchise’s 2027 slot before House of the Dragon returns.

Why won’t Season 4 arrive sooner?

Showrunner Ryan Condal said in July 2026 that the scripts were essentially written and that HBO would receive the drafts during the summer. He also said production would not begin until early 2027.

The delay comes from the size of the production. The team has to coordinate actors, sets, budgets, and filming locations across several countries before shooting starts. The episodes are then completed with extensive visual-effects work, including the dragons and large battle sequences.

A 2028 premiere fits that schedule. It does not indicate that the series has been canceled or quietly delayed beyond HBO’s announced plan.

Which cast members could return?

HBO has not announced the Season 4 cast. Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, and Tom Glynn-Carney played four of the central figures in Season 3, so they are the main returning names viewers expect. Their involvement is not official until HBO confirms it.

No new actors or characters have been announced for the final season. The network has also not confirmed how many episodes it will contain.

What will Season 4 cover?

There is no official Season 4 synopsis yet. The series will continue the Targaryen civil war adapted from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood and bring the television story to its ending.

The adaptation’s changes from the book will remain part of the fan conversation. Season 3 already prompted debate after viewers thought one scene answered Martin’s earlier “toxic butterflies” warning.

Condal has described Season 4 as the final act. HBO has not announced a fifth season or another continuation with the same cast.

Is there a House of the Dragon Season 4 trailer?

No. Filming has not started, so HBO has not released Season 4 footage, a teaser, or first-look images. Videos using that label are fan edits or clips from earlier seasons unless they come from HBO’s official channels.

The video on this page is the official Season 3 final trailer, not a Season 4 preview. Production is expected to begin in early 2027, and HBO has not said when the first material from the final season will be released.
