Robert Pattinson’s Primetime was close behind at $19.2 million. The Avengers: Endgame Encore re-release took first with $26 million, followed by Resident Evil at $23.3 million.
That left Forgotten Island behind four films aimed mostly at older viewers. The $12.8 million figure is an opening-weekend estimate, so reported totals may change as final receipts arrive. Its first US weekend is only the beginning of its theatrical run, not a final box-office result.
What are audiences responding to?
The film follows Jo and Raissa, two friends who are about to go separate ways after high school. A portal takes them to Nakali, an island inspired by Filipino folklore. Getting home may cost them the memories of their friendship. H.E.R. voices Jo, Liza Soberano voices Raissa, and Dave Franco voices a creature called Raww.
CinemaScore’s A grade suggests the people polled on opening night liked what they saw. That does not tell us how many new viewers will go next weekend. It does explain why this opening is worth watching closely: the movie has positive audience feedback, but ticket sales have not yet matched it.
