Drew Barrymore remembers wondering why no one would give Richard Kelly a chance to direct Donnie Darko. In an October 2 interview, she said she wanted his vision preserved. Nancy Juvonen helped bring the script to her, and Barrymore agreed to join while she was filming Charlie’s Angels.
Kelly remembers a quick meeting between takes, with Barrymore’s limited availability helping move the project toward financing. The film eventually brought together a young lead and experienced costars.
Those memories arrive as the film returns to U.S. theaters for its 25th anniversary. The October 2–4 event pairs a 4K presentation with a new introduction by Kelly. It revisits the 2001 film, rather than introducing a new cast or a remake.
Barrymore’s role went beyond appearing on screen
Barrymore plays English teacher Karen Pomeroy, but her involvement also helped get the film made. Looking back in 2016, Kelly described her participation as essential to securing financing, with Flower Films joining the production. Her support meant more than adding a recognizable name to a supporting role.
Juvonen is one of the film’s credited producers, alongside Sean McKittrick and Adam Fields. Kelly wrote the screenplay and directed. The distinction matters here: Barrymore’s performance, Juvonen’s producing work and Kelly’s directing were different contributions to the same project.
Jake Gyllenhaal was not the first actor attached
Jason Schwartzman was initially attached to play Donnie, but a scheduling conflict took him out of the film. Kelly recalled recognizing Gyllenhaal as the right choice when they met. Schwartzman’s early involvement belongs to the casting history; he does not appear in the finished movie.
In a September 2026 conversation, Kelly explained that Schwartzman also arranged a meeting with Francis Ford Coppola at American Zoetrope in Los Angeles. Coppola had marked a Karen Pomeroy line heard in the Director’s Cut. Kelly could describe the note, but only speculate about exactly what Coppola meant by it.
Kelly said Karen grew out of three or four of his high-school English teachers. The character’s connection to literature came from those experiences. His memories gave the adult supporting role a personal basis, alongside the teenage perspective at the center of the screenplay.
Donnie Darko: the original film
3 screenshotsA young director on a short schedule
Kelly’s first feature had a 28-day shooting schedule. In his earlier account, he described the pressure of limited money and time, rather than a carefree first production. He also remembered Patrick Swayze being nervous about taking on an unlikeable character, then trusting him enough to accept the challenge.
There was a practical reason the film could shoot in Los Angeles. Kelly explained that a summer 2000 strike affecting commercials and music videos left crews and equipment available at lower cost. Staying in Los Angeles, instead of moving production to Toronto, also helped him reach young actors there.
He wrote the script in 1998 and set it around Halloween in 1988. The suburban surroundings came partly from his Virginia childhood, with Donnie modeled on an older brother and his friends. Kelly was looking back across a decade when he built the teenager’s world.
Mary McDonnell remembers the quieter moments on set
Mary McDonnell, who plays Donnie’s mother, Rose, recalled Swayze discussing the difficulty of his role over lunch. In a September 27 interview, she described him as committed to the challenge even when it frightened him. That was not how the entire working day felt: she also remembered the cast joking and watching Survivor together during breaks. The demanding material and lighter downtime were both part of her experience.
The finished ensemble also includes Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Noah Wyle, Katharine Ross, Seth Rogen, Daveigh Chase, Holmes Osborne, James Duval and Beth Grant. They share the film with Jake Gyllenhaal, Barrymore, McDonnell and Swayze. Schwartzman’s early attachment should not be confused with those completed screen credits.
The anniversary screenings and watching at home
The anniversary presentation includes Kelly’s introduction and is a separate cinema event. Local screening dates depend on the participating theater, so the October 2–4 window does not mean every venue is showing it on all three days.
For viewers in the United States, the original 2001 film is currently listed on Hulu and is available free with ads on Tubi. Those home-viewing options are separate from the anniversary screenings. The Tubi listing for the original film is also distinct from its longer Director’s Cut listing.
