Dave Bautista is officially set to play Kratos in Amazon Prime Video’s God of War series. Variety reports that Bautista will replace Ryan Hurst, who left the production after suffering a torn bicep that required surgery. The change resolves the casting question we covered earlier, but it also means the show has to revisit scenes that were already filmed. Variety’s report says production is expected to resume in Vancouver in the coming weeks.
Amazon and Sony still have a two-season order in place, and the adaptation remains based on the two most recent God of War games. No premiere date has been announced.
Why Ryan Hurst left the series
Ryan Hurst was announced as Kratos in January and had already started filming when he suffered a torn bicep on set. The injury required surgery and would have pushed the production’s restart into 2027. Amazon and Sony chose to recast the role instead of waiting for Hurst to recover. PC Gamer’s confirmation also notes that the move is tied to the physical demands of playing Kratos, not a change to the character or story.
This is a major production change because Kratos is present throughout the father-and-son story at the center of the show. Hurst’s scenes will be filmed again with Bautista, so the recast affects material that was already in the can rather than a project still waiting to start.
Bautista now leads as Kratos
Bautista is known for playing Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy films and for roles in Dune and Blade Runner 2049. As Kratos, he will play a former Spartan warrior who has become a god and is trying to guide his son after the death of Faye, Atreus’ mother. Variety describes the actor as one of the few performers who could step into a role with the character’s physical demands on short notice.
The casting changes the performance at the center of the series, but the announced framework remains intact. Amazon has not announced another change to the lead cast as part of the recast.
