Some of 2026’s biggest game scares came from a monster charging straight at the screen. Others left players staring at the ending and trying to work out what they had just seen. These five scenes kept coming up in discussions hosted by the games’ official communities.

This is not a scientific ranking. It is a shortlist built for an argument. One player’s nightmare was another player’s cheap jump scare, and DELTARUNE fans could not even agree that their game belongs in a horror conversation.

1. Resident Evil Requiem — Grace’s basement encounter

Grace’s trip into the care center basement is the clearest pick on the list. One player called the encounter with the chain-carrying woman the scariest part of the game. In a separate discussion, longtime Resident Evil players said the opening hours rivaled or surpassed Resident Evil 7, and one admitted turning the game off.

The first-person camera does a lot of the work. The basement keeps Grace close to the threat, limits what the player can see, and makes every sound feel nearby. Other players recommended switching her sections to third person if the tension became too much.

2. REANIMAL — the final return to the well

REANIMAL ends where much of its pain began: at the well. The closing images show the four boys looking down after the girl’s betrayal and sacrifice. Players quickly split over what the ritual means, whether the creatures are literal, and how much of the island reflects trauma caused by the war.

The scene does not need a chase or a loud reveal. It takes an image introduced near the start and makes it crueler once the missing context arrives. The ending also refuses to settle every theory, which is why players were still pulling it apart long after the credits.

3. Poppy Playtime Chapter 5 — Huggy’s grinder memory

Chapter 5 asks players to experience Huggy Wuggy’s memories, then uses them to turn the series’ most recognizable monster into a victim. The hardest scene shows Huggy being forced to put other toys into a grinder and punished with electric shocks when he fails to obey.

Players called the Miss Gracie and Huggy flashbacks some of the chapter’s strongest material. The grinder memory stood out because it changes the fear. Huggy is still dangerous when he hunts the player, but the flashback shows what Playtime Co. did to him first.

4. DELTARUNE Chapter 5 — the Weird Route lake scene

DELTARUNE is the surprise entry. During Chapter 5’s Weird Route, Noelle pulls Kris into the lake even if the player tells her to stop. The sequence ends without a clean answer, and many players read it as the two characters drowning. Others believe the Side B message points to a continuation later in the story.

Several fans picked the lake when asked for the game’s scariest moment. Others answered that DELTARUNE simply is not scary. The scene still rattled players because the command stops feeling like control. Noelle moves forward, the player cannot talk her out of it, and the game cuts away before giving anyone relief.

5. Fatal Frame II — the ghost behind the door

Opening a door is supposed to be routine. Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake turns it into a gamble by placing ghosts inches away on the other side. Players described seeing only a few pixels of a face before Mio froze, lost willpower, or entered a fight at a disadvantage.

The argument around this scare was almost as strong as the reaction. Some players laughed and called it the oldest ghost trick in the book. Others said the dodge window felt unreliable even when they knew the ghost was coming. Either way, the remake taught them to distrust every door.
